Gti6 Inlet Manifold Onto Mi16 Engine

Recommended Posts

lee.kendallmi16

Will the Gti6 inlet manifold fit the mi16 head? Also would that mean I use a Gti6 throttle body with it and be able to keep the existing mi16 AFM??

Problem I've got is a standard mi16 throttle body with a vacuum leak,

I ran a Gti-6 inlet on my mi16 but binned the loom and everything else inc. Afm, dizzy, ignition amp in fact all the old engine side of the loom.

The car ran on an emerald ECU and loom, coil pack from a 106 and made use of the tps, air temp sens on the Gti-6 inlet.

It made 10 more bhp.

There are pictures and write up in my rebuild thread in the project section.

Thanks for the response guys!

I will take a closer look at this now I know what's involved.

The hardest part of the job is doing a neat job with the oil filler/breather pipes. Something which the linked thread above didn't address.

I used 8v filler pipe and located it by the alternator so the inlet by the throttle body area isnt quite as cluttered.

Found that the pickup at lower rpm did improve a little.

You could fit an Audi throttle body.

The VAG/Audi 2.8 v6 throttle body looks like there's less work involved and less parts to source.

Has anyone else had the experience of fitting this throttle body or owning an mi16 with one fitted?

im also quite curious to know, would there be any benefits from a larger choke area?

This was tried out by an old forum member "Dino" on his 205. Can't remember if it was on his 8v or 16v - or in fact if there were any gains. Would have been around 2003?

google 205GTI+throttle response!

From looking into this, I've found that only the VW 1.8 16v PL engine throttle body can be fitted and not the one from the KR engine.

Can anyone confirm that it is only the audi 2.8 v6 throttle body that can be fitted and not the 2.6 v6 (I think 12v) throttle body. Or can both be used?

There are loads of 2.6 v6 available on flea bay with a TPS fitted and it looks the same.

Seems like alot of VAG cars use that same throttle body - some people say 1.8's, some say 2.9's. In fact i have a 80's scirocco gtx TB here in front of me that looks the same except it has two TPS switches as opposed to one - one for closed throttle and one for wide open. I know i haven't been much help but what i am trying to say is that you may have to suck it and see - either way you will have to modify an mi16 TPS to fit.

I looked into doing this mod a couple of years back and have since decided to just go to the extra effort of fitting a gti6 inlet.

can you run a gti-6 inlet and throttle body if you have 8v management with dizzy adapter etc?

probably, but if youre going to the effort of making the inlet fit you might as well do a proper job and find the proper management.

I have seen a 2.2 Audi TB that looks the same.

I don't think it's been done before. Don't see why it wouldn't work* seeing as all you're changing is the TB essentially. The 8v TPS is the same as the Mi, but you'd have to get ingenious with the piping for the SAD and all the breathers. There's no right way of doing this, and it's pretty much ad-hoc.

If it were me, I'd be finding Mi management and getting that sorted first.

*Doesn't mean it'll work well though!

ok ill try source a 16v setup or like simes suggested and save up the pennies, ditch the whole lot and go for a 3rd party ecu and loom.

That's right, tps etc is all built into the throttle body. Much tidier.

Simes, just out of interest, does your management also use the gti6 MAP sensor in the inlet manifold or is it only the TPS? Since i hope to use a similar setup down the line.

I don't have this set up anymore but all it used was TPS and Air temp, no MAP as far as I can remember.

When I fitted the throttle bodies on the electrical sie I simply unplugged the TPS and ATS from the GTI-6 inlet and plugged them into the new components, I drove it to Emerald on the same map, a bit lumpy but I knew it wasn't going to do any damage.
