What Motorbike Carbs Can Be Used On A Rallye

Hi guys just wondered if anyone has put motorbike carbs on a 1.4 Rallye 205, there are many types/models any suggestions guys?

I've been looking into it myself as this is what i will be doing and it seams the most popular choice is r6 carbs. Bogg bros and danst engineering both use these carbs with there manifolds

This has been asked before mate, I think the general consensus on here is to not bother with bike carbs - purley because they are a nightmare to get setup properly and/or find a decent manifold. Have you considered twin webers/dellortos? If it comes down to money I've always like the idea of SU carbs could be interesting on a budget?

 

I take it your not selling your rallye anymore? I would have snapped that up had i of had the money!

Going to keep it I've hopefully sold the back Clio I've had for sale so the Rallye is safe again :) a twin 40 set up would be cool

I know everyone says don't bother but as long as you get them set up properly by a carb specialist there shouldn't be a issue. A local lad has done this on his car and hasn't had a issue with them from set up nearly two years ago

It's not really about the carbs themselves but the method of connection to and poor design of the manifolds

I've been asking for advise on a manifold to use as trying to find a good one is hard and all Im doing is trying to pass on a bit of info I've pick up while looking into it myself from here and talking to other people.

Not sure of the carbs he's running its on a saxo he picked it up manifold and carbs second hand off ebay will ask him if he has more info on it when i see him

The issue is the connections. It's one of the reasons why I've just sent Colin Satchell some alternative throttle bodies for his manifolds. The bogg brothers stuff looks terrible to me. Not seen them ever perform well either. Probably in part due to different length pipes for each cylinder.

No you're giving advice on something you have no experience of, telling someone to go ahead and spend hundreds of pounds for little gain..

Setting them up won't sort anything out if the manifold is a poor design, what about the angle they sit at? Clearance issues? Tuned Length? And with all those steps in the inlet will it flow? Will it Fu....c..,.,

mine had honda fireblade carbs on with a custom inlet jobby - guy who put them on was a fabricator at my firm so made it himself.

 

clearance wise you'll need to shave down the top engine mount and possibly weld something onto it so you can add the third bolt - probably not essential but its not a bad idea.

 

difficult to set up, mine got set up, ran good for a few weeks, and then decided it didnt want to play ball anymore and ran like crap again.

 

so i think its definitely worth knowing how to tinker with it yourself (having worked on old cars for a living, we were forever having to adjust the bloody carbs that were on our fleet vehicles, and in the end just replaced them with webbers )

 

from my experience - go for twin webbers if you want to upgrade from the single solex, - bike carbs sound cool when your bombing down the road but, i think you'll spend more time finding parts and tinkering etc for no real gains, twin webbers are tried and tested, it makes sense.

Looking around you can pick up some DCOE type carbs for less than bike carbs/bodies these days, and a good manifold for this type is far easier to produce as you can buy the flanged pre cut and tapped, this easily gets around the mounting issues as they still need some form of vibration damping, hence the use of silicone joiners with bike carbs which is where you get most issues.

 

Bike bodies can and should be solidly mounted, just like DCOE type Throttle bodies.
