What Would You Ask For?

Recommended Posts

NFS

Hi,

I build websites for friends and recommendations and one particular
recommendation is to an engine rebuilding specialist and he said he is
interested in a swap of trades deal, so I will build him a website and he will
do some engine work for me.

Now I haven’t really driven my engine, not more than a mile
and don’t know if its strong or not as I don’t have any history with it. what
would you ask for if you were in my position? I need to have things in my mind
when I go for a meeting with him tomorrow?

Does your engine need any work?

If talking about engine modifications, you'd need to be confident that this person has the relevant skills and expertise, since there's a difference between engine building/rebuilding and engine modification.

Perhaps start from the point of asking him what he can offer you, and negotiate from there.

Also, from a value point of view, how much would you charge a client for the work you are going to do for him?

they are the local engine engineering place, i dont know much of what they do apart from head skimming and rebuilds, i know they do port and polishing, the value would be in the region of £400.

the issue i have is i havnt driven my car enough to see if there is anything wrong and i have no history, currently the shell is getting a restoration, and i was going to leave the engine alone intill i can get an idea if there was something wrong, its an xu10 j2te RGX, i was wondering what i could have done to improve performace and peice of mind as i will have history of what been done on the car?

How trustworthy is this person?

If he knows that you know very little about the engine and all work is internal then how can you be sure it's up to scratch or even done at all?

Look at it this way; He will get a free website and all the work you put in clearly visible to anyone, you get an engine that may well be like new right now anyway, and no way of knowing what he's had to do,if anything.

Given the fact that you currently have no way of testing the engine as it is, would it not be wise to assume for now that the engine is good, that cash is the payment and then cross the engine rebuild bridge if and when it needs it?

if your engine is good then why not just bank the favour, then if the engine goes bang it will save you some cash

or

buy a engine that is worn/used and get him to do the work on that to your spec,i presume its a 8 valve engine so can be picked up cheap
