Gti-6 Using Alot Of Oil

Recommended Posts

Karl

the oil consumption of my gti6 seems to high. ive had a search and most people tend to point to the valve stem seals. its also worth noting that my head is a tapper any ideas, recomendations or advice would be welcomed greatly.

because my head is a tapper i was contemplating rebuilding it. is it hard to do? what does it entail? how much will it cost ive never done it before but feel confindent in my ability to do it im thinking if its the seals then i might aswell do it all :)

many thanks guys

Could be a number of things - stem seals, rings/bores, breathers, leaks etc.

How high is high, and is there any obvious smoke or noticable smell of oil being burnt?

cost of bent vales * number of bent valves

+ cost of skim

+ cost of prerssure test

+ cost of new stem seals

+ cost of new hg

+ cost of bolts

+ cost of inlet manifold gasket

+ cost of exhaust manifold gasket

+ cost of exhaust manifold 'doughnut' gasket kit

+ cost of oil

+ cost of sandpaper / various other material

+ cost of cambelt kit

I had a head skimmed and tested for £100 or so, plus materials (no bent valves).

all in all i would budget for £400 assuming 8 bent valves

there is only white smoke, no blue smoke or signs of burning oil. over about 2000 miles the oil level is at the bottom of the dipstick from eing almost at the top imnot sure how much this is though

not hard. there is a thread on here about getting the guides out, and youll need a clamp to do the valves. but a bit of research on tinternet will sort you out.

white would indicate coolant more than anything, I would have the head off and inspect the bores before you go spending any money on parts.

ok i will do this, im guessing this would mean the headgasketis blown exept there are no signs of overheating, coolant usage, 'mayo' in the oil etc and to be fair it has had white smoke for a while, it isnt excessive amounts of white smoke just a little what would i be looking for upon inspecting the bores

Are you sure that it's white smoke? When people say "blue" smoke, it's actually whiteish-grey with a slight blueish tinge.

If you're using lots of oil and minimal amounts of coolant, it suggests burning oil more than coolant.
