Help! Strangest Sound From Inside The Dash

Recommended Posts

omri617

Hi again dear friends
Suddenly there is this sound :

www.youtube.com/watch?v=x01RhnkAwQo

Things done before it came :
replacing the radiator .

It sounds strange , like coming from the dashboard inside , where the passenger foot area and the glovebox (my car is left hand drive)

I changed the right (Long) driveshaft , it didn't make any difference!

ORB

Get underneath, there is a heat shield that clips onto the steering rack.

My OBD car had this rattle on over run and this was the cause. It was unclipped causing the rattle.

Sounds more like an ignition fault like its running on 3 or missing etc does it drive ok or does it hesitate/struggle to go does it idle?

ORB - got underneath the car , couldn't find what you told me :(

I never saw there is a shield for the steering rack

By the way , it increases when pushing the throttle , and also when the car is not straight , entering my parking lot some uphill and a turn.

I must be deaf cos i cant hear bugger all wrong there, if the cars running fine and theres noise coming from the footwell/behind the dash area check your manifold for cracks as mine ticked quite loudly until i welded it up

Oh and put some fuel in before you run out :P

Question :

When car is stall , running in Neutral , pushing the throttle increases the noise . which parts are moving in there that have potential to be the cause?

Alternator, waterpump, power steering pump (if fitted), bottom crank pulley could be loose and potentially anything inside the engine

could also be something moving around hitting the alternator fins

Downpipe hitting linkage?

I'm with ORB on this. If the sound I'm hearing is what you are questioning, it's most clear in the first video and sounds like a very dull and hollow rattle, that comes in when you blip the throttle and then hold the revs. So to me it sounds exactly as I'd expect from the downpipe touching something, such as the gear linkage, subframe or exhaust tunnel.

It's most likely that your engine mounts are knackered, and so the excessive engine movement when revved is allowing the downpipe to come in to contact.

Edit: listen to it from here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=x01RhnkAwQo#t=24s

+1 on the worn engine mounts. My aftermarket 4-branch was knocking massively against the long gear rod until the engine mounts were upgraded, hasn't done it since!

You know you could actually work that out for yourself if you spend 5 minutes peering under the bonnet.

You are going to have to start helping yourself if you want to learn anything about these cars.

Eventually , to find out that the engine mount is Cracked!

So you were right Barnaby about it all I thank you , also to you Lemmingzappa

Good. Hopefully you didn't take my last post as offensive. I was using my phone and can't use emoticons to soften my tone

Getting quick answers from the forum community is great at times, but don't let it become a dependancy. The best way to learn is to be hands on and try to figure things through yourself.

Not at all , even if it was a bit tiny offensive , Sharing your knowledge , help , and the will to answer silly questions all the time from us , just makes it vanish. :excl:
