Engine/gearbox Rebuild Recommendations And Quotes?

Recommended Posts

DanRM

I'm looking to get the engine and gearbox sorted in my 1.6 gti towards the end of this summer (after seeing if the shell is as good as it appears to be). The head gasket keeps failing (4x in 3 years) so I'm definately going to get the 2nd hand head I bought rebuilt before that goes on at least. But as I'm planning on dropping the engine to clean up in the bay I'm considering to get it rebuilt as up until 3 years ago I have no idea on the history of it and I'm planning on keeping the car for a fair few years yet.

I'm going to go round a few fairly local places to get quotes on a full rebuild of the engine and then gearbox in the next couple of weeks. I know it can be a bit of a tricky question to answer due to what I have/needs to be done by who, but what price would I be looking at for each? as I don;t know what would be a reasonable quote And what would you suggest I ask to have done?

One place I'm considering to send the head to is Moss Engineering in Ledbury Herefordshire, My granddad used to use them a lot for work when he was alive and recommended them highly. Plus it turns out the owner is my cousin haha.

Also if anyone can recommend reputable companies around Herefordshire or close to it that could do the work?

Cheers

Miles is the forum gearbox guru, and he can do engines too. Give him a PM.

If the headgasket keeps going then I'd check the block as these quite often cause the problem too, Silly not to while it's apart, you can either replace it or skim that but then you need to do the liners to suit which isn't cheap

Gearbox's can be anything from £100.00 up, depends on how far you wish to go

Thanks for the replies, I started a new job last week training to be a machinist and I was talking to my new boss about wanting to get the engine rebuilt on the 205 in the next few months and he said if I wanted to I could take it in and work on that and he'll show me what to do during the quieter days. I've asked the parts guy there to run some prices on bits for the spare head I have which he will do when he's got a bit of free time, but he said that their suppliers may not be the cheapest place to get them from and I may want to have a search myself as well and see who comes up with the best. Can anyone recommend any places/sites that are good for parts?

Cheers
