To Break Or Not To Break 205 Mi16

Recommended Posts

jamie_1992

i have acquired a mi16 1.9 alloy block 205

the engine is in bits requires a crank the car comes with a full rebuild kit

its done around 150000 miles in fairly tatty condition but dose have around 6 months mot

now the question is what is it worth i know these are a fairly rare engine now and can be rather pricey, should i brake the car or rebuild it i need to gauge interest in it if i were to brake

so what do you think?

Probably more sensible to break it.

I don't think braking it will net you much profit

it dose need the roof and bonnet respraying as paint has faded

That's purely cosmetic though, if its a solid enough car no reason to break it for a bit of paint fade. Just bang an 8v back in it, sell the mi stuff and get it back on the road.

I'd fix it. They're getting really rare now and the value of a running car even only in fair condition will only be going upwards. The paint looks ok to me tbh, and a bit of plasticare on those bumpers will make her look much more presentable...

But if insist on breaking her (it'd be a shame) I'd like fist dibs on the drivers side door! ;)

looks an ideal car to restore back to eight valve to me and then you can flog the remnants of the mi-16 lump to fund it all! :)

too many are being broken for spares these days and from the pic it deserves better in my opinion!

rebuild the mi-16,put it on bodies and terrorise the country side. rebuilding my engine was the single best thing I did, learnt lots, feel more of a man because of it.

if it all goes wrong you'll only end up with an mi ha that needs rebuilding, which is what you have now.

I was tempted to put an 8v back in I got a 1.9 lump that needs a crank also I just think the mileage might be an issue don't really want to put all that effort in for no return

What would be worth more a 1.9 gti or. Mi16

Depends what you mean by return, if your looking to make some cash from it you'll struggle unless you already have the bits, also depends how much you paid for it in the first place. But personally i'd see the return as putting another 205 back on the road, as already said there aren't many left now.

milage has now to be honest become largely irrelevant. Most of these cars are like triggers broom mechanically, they've either had the engine done, refreshed, along with probably a rear beam, and most of the suspension replaced.

As long as it's a solid shell it's worth doing, people on here are rescuing ever more rusty examples, where as a few years ago they would have been binned.

If you want to make money out of cars, pugs are not the way forwards, unless you have the time money and space to buy them in job lots and break them, then sell the bits on, package, post... its loads of work, and people invariably end up with loads of trim, and bits left over that they end up binning. Plus it takes ages.

If you can't be arsed to restore it or rebuild the engine, both worthy uses of your time, i'm sure someone on here would only be to happy to take it off your hands, for near enough what you sold it for.

MI-16 cranks go for between 20-100 quid depending on you getting lucky.

Hard to judge value without far more info, but in my eyes a Phase 2 1.9 8v in fairly good order has to be worth £1000 minimum these days and you'll struggle to get close to that for it in bits. Certainly I just sold my '92 1.9 GTi for £1300, and that was if anything underpriced, even taking into account the paint issues it had.

Generally speaking, they're worth as much as an 8v as with a 16v conversion, if not more on an otherwise tidy, standard car.

150k miles isn't really an issue price wise - of course it won't fetch top dollar like a genuine historied low mileage one will, but these are 20+ year old cars now and people will expect them to be well North of 100k miles and anyone with sense buys on condition, not mileage.

Things have changed a lot in the 205 market in the past couple of years, and cars in general have always been somewhat undervalued for some reason on this forum.

Best popping something up on the wanted forum really.

I certainly have a good 1.9 Mi16 conrod - say £10?

I have at least a couple of 1.9 Mi16 crank shafts that are in good condition and have been professionally checked, but I would want to have a think on what to ask price wise for one, as they're now rather scarce and I've been saving them for a rainy day should I go down the 1.9 Mi16 route myself in the future.

8v it and sell it on. You will make more money from an 8v than a 16v as they are more collectable. Quality not quantity too; consolidate your many cars into the couple you really want. No point having 8 sh!tters when you can have 2 minters :)
