Help, Please! Suddenly Not Starting - 1.9 Series 1.5

Car is a s1.5 1990 1.9

Yesterday I pulled the GTI the couple of metres forward out of it's makeshift car port got the bonnet up and removed the battery to have a good clean up of the engine bay, I took care not to knock any connections but it's difficult to know if anything took a light nudge or a knock throughout the afternoon, at the same time I wired in the original stereo wiring connector that I was so generously sent by daza4, I hooked the battery back up (it's a very tight fit) and started the car - it's got a bit of a dodgy idle where by if you rev it a little too keenly initially it will immediately stall (was planning to get this looked at by my local specialist on Tuesday) I've also noticed the past few times I've taken it out that it's turned over maybe 2 or 3 more times before it fired where as before it caught pretty much straight away, on top of this and also being looked at is the dash battery light being on ever so faintly when there's a lot of load on the battery, lights, heater etc - it will flash a tiny bit brighter when the indicators are on etc, regardless of this it's been starting and running ok for weeks.. So anyway I reversed it back into the car port and it stalled but coast reversed plenty to get in so I just turned off the ignition and went inside - As it was a nice evening and it's the first time I've had music in the car I decided to take it for a run, when I got back in the car after faffing about inside for about 15 minutes though it will not start, it turns over and over but never catches - I went over the engine as best I could making sure I hadn't knocked any obvious connectors out but still no firing - I'm a real beginner so whilst my best guess is that suddenly there's no fuel going to the engine, I'm not 100% sure how to assess this and I would appreciate some advice from people with experience before I go any further - I'd happily let the garage sort it on Tuesday but now I have no way of getting it the 15 miles over there, short of a tow which I'd sooner not do.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

omega

remove a plug and see if you have a spark, this will also tell you if you have fuel as the plug should be wet as its not starting.

Massive thanks to Paul who came over and helped this total amateur out! Turned out my attempts at wiring the stereo in properly had gotten the aftermarket immobiliser all upset, starts fine again now.

Cheers again to 205turbo/Paul - Really appreciate your time and expertise mate.
