Think of going in the next couple months and would love to take a 205 Gti but I'm bit concerned about how long it takes to get there and the car being a bit old lol

Loads of people have and still do if its your cup of tea! As for it being a old, its as reliable as YOU make it and maintain it.

i took mine a couple years ago. was fine apart from a cv boot splitting on the way over and chucking out all the grease on the autoban, but carried on and did a 1000 miles on it. it only started making a sweaking clicking noise when i was about 20 miles from home. a lot of people on here go regularly with theirs, baz and lemmingzappa were there when i was.

I'm thinking a Gti 6 205 Gti with a good engine and few new parts and a boot of spares lol

Take what you think you'll need.

I've done thousands of miles across Europe carrying a simple toolkit, bottle of water and euro breakdown cover.

We went with 2x 205s and a 309.. All on trailers it's the only way :D

It's great in a Peugeot aslong as you don't mind being overtaken by german teenagers in Porsche GT2 and GT3rs..

Seriously tho it's one hell of an experience but cost us the same as 5 trackdays!

Been going for 4 years in my road 205 with the BH2N Retro Run group (5th trip coming this year, see here for details: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=148539). Not had any major issues, just a couple of problems with tyres scrubbing on 7J wheels which are now sorted! Would suggest ADAC for UK & Euro breakdown cover if you haven't got any already and just make sure you are happy with the car before you make the journey!

No worse than anything else on the road, just make sure it's all up together and you'll be fine

That's from the 2005 PSOOOOOOOOOOOOC 4 Nations Tour! The infamous Dino in the passenger seat.

As others have said, give the car a good going over and make sure it's tip-top. Whenever I go, I always carry a toolset and plenty of spares. Mi16s aren't exactly common anymore! It's not that far either, I usually go for the 8am ferry from Dover to Dunkerque and am in Adenau (Blau Ecke or Eddie's) for late afternoon with a stop off for petrol/food/dump. That's buzzing along at a good 80mph.

If you're going to do it, going with a group like us BH2N lot is a good way of experiencing it. Going over with folks with similar cars is great anyway.

People that come with us lot can take you for a passenger lap so you know what's what and can then even go as a passenger on your first lap to be a mirror man and tell you what's coming up behind you.

That's a good piece of advise...

Make sure to go there with someone who really knows the Ring... My first time around the ring i was a passenger with someone who had done laps on a regular basis (5 days a year?) When i finaly did my lap, this guy accompanied me in the passenger-seat of my S16 convertible (top down :) ) ... Probably i would have managed a fun lap on my own, but it's really nice to have someone guiding you trough...

I got given a CTI the other month, can't decide whether to plonk a GTI-6 lump in it or not....

Seriously though, there's no problem at all with taking a 205 there. Just make sure it's in good order, well maintained and that you don't push yourself or the car too hard on your first trip.

It's a beautiful place and an amazing track, but there are some VERY fast cars on there, some very fast drivers, accompanied by motorbikes that swarm around you like wasps and overtake you on the straights, then slow you down in the corners, then you'll be doing your best around a corner and find some German dad taking his family around there on a Sunday afternoon in an MPV doing 40mph.

It's a hard track to even begin to learn and the conditions can be very varied during one lap. Lemmingzappa's Pug does well around there, though I did sick in my mouth a little bit on my passenger lap with him last September. I put that down to my over-eating, not his driving though.

Don't go there if you really just want a fast lap, you will not be fast around the ring first time around... And you shouldn't be.... Just enjoy the lap!

'The matt' is right on the different drivers and speeds... Make sure to familiarize (especially for you right-hand drivers) yourself with the rules:

- Drive on the right side of the road,
- Overtake on the left

- use indicators to show your intend (the first lap i was almost constantly indicating right, let them overtake!!)

One corner i was overtaken by both a Golf GTi, a Lamborghini and a porche GT3 at pretty much the same time...

and you never ever drag your car out of the garage the week before and MOT it with only a day or two to go...!

Rob

P.S. I've taken my 8v as well and can confirm Alan's timings with about an 80mph cruise including a stop off for fuel and food on the way.
