Few Guage Problems!

Recommended Posts

botters

hi was wondering if anyone can help ive got a problem with a few guages on my 1.9 gti

firstly the fuel guage doesnt work, ive checked at the connector for the sender and there is two earths but no live to the sender, where does the live come from?

secondly when i switch ignition on (engine off) the oil temperature guage goes right over to maximum and stays there when running never goes higher or lower till the ignition is switched off

and lastly the temp guage does not appear to be working the cooling fan operates as it should and the car does not overheat just the guage never moves, the guage is permanantly on the first notch on the guage even with the ignition off

ive checked wiring to the above sensors and they do appear to be connected as far as i can tell, so anything i can check for or does anyone have any wiring diagrams perhaps

thanks in advance

If it's everything connected as it supposed to be , remove the instrument cluster and take a good look at the electric contact fol for cracks , burnt diodes/resistors .. if all seems fine just clean up the foil contacts (with contact spray) where the wiring connectors for the gauges plugs on the clusters , clean and tension the connectors as well (tension i mean just take a pocket screwdriver and slightly bend each terminal so that they're more tight/snug fit when connected on the cluster terminals ..)

If non of this works , you'll need to dig into the wiring .. as per description it shouldn't be a hard one to pinpoint cos it affects more than just one components , so just need to check the few circuits and earths i.e. the ones which affects the instrument cluster gauges ..

Can download wiring diagram from here :

I would take a good look at your sensor loom, specifically the brown multiplug, if you do a search you'll find this is a common problem. This is possibly the cause of the water temp gauge problem. The oil temp gauge could also be the brown multiplug, if its constantly reading max then the wire could be earthing against the block somewhere. The wire also often breaks due to how its routed and the close proximity to the exhaust manifold, so look near there for a possible break. If everything seems in good order, brown multiplug not corroded and all wires connected then i would look at the cluster.

ok will give those suggestions a go tommorow, just to clarify, the oil temp sensor is next to the oil pressure guage sensor? or is that the low pressure warning light sensor?

i rewired two sensors on the back of the head today that were side by side and went to a 3 pin brown plug are these water sensors? i rewired due to brittle wiring, the connector had a wire for each sensor and an earth wire does this sound correct?

The oil temp sensor is in the sump at the back, on the front of the block the larger sensor is the pressure sender, the smaller is the warning light. Each sensor should only have one wire going to it, they earth through the sensor itself. The two sensors on the back of the head near the dizzy are for the water and are side by side but only have a single wire to each. The brown 3 pin plug sounds like the Pug diagnostic plug that's generally in that area, this is not used.

Edit: Here's a picture that may be useful concentrate on the 1-7 this plug is found above the gearbox, just trace the wires back from the sensors.

the 3 pin plug had both male and female parts to it and the wires headed in the direction of the two head sensors, one wire from the 3 pin plug was allready earthed the other two wires were hanging freely but the black plastic spade terminals were still attached to the sensors in the head with small amounts of wire still in them that corresponded to the wires hanging out of the 3 pin plug it looked like they had broke due to being brittle hence i think they may now be correct but im not sure. thinking about it im sure the male and female parts of the 3 pin plug did not have matching colours so maybe the female or male side has been connected to the incorrect plug? ill have to double check that tommorow

cheers for the pic ill deffo have a look tommorow, what are your thoughts on the fuel sender? its 3 pin i had two earths present at the plug which i presume go to the guage and low fuel light but there was no live at the plug. the guage occasionally comes on briefly and appears by my guesstimate to be reading correct when it does come on so i think i can rule out guage and sender, where does the sender get its 12v feed from is it just an ign live? sorry for all the questions pal

Fuel sender gets voltage from the instrument clusters , and it's earthed at the back on "earthing block" inside the boot near the left rear lamp ..

so should i have two lives from the guage and one earth from the sender to the earth point near the light?

Oil temp. gauge - if it jumps up to maxi as you say when the ignition is ON means the wire towards the sender it touching earth somewhere .. follow the wire (it's just one single wire from the sender , white color ((it's blue on my 205 so that's for color identification!!)) , and it runs up to the main loom where it joins with the rest of the wiring ..) , could be easily touching the engine block and thus earthing which makes the gauge reads maxi with ignition ON

Coolant temp. senders - try to reconnect the two wires for the senders other way around , often mistaken if connected backwards the gauge wont work ..

That's right :) - two lives from the instrument clusters , and earth from the rear light to the sender .

The lives (from the clusters) are No. 65 and 65a .

Earth M65

There's a number stamp on each wire on the insulation , say 1cm from where the wire starts and ends so each side is numbered , and by this you're reading/identifying which wire is which (so not by the color of the wire) and you use that number reading for tracking the wires which ones they are for which component and where they go by looking at the wiring diagram .

swapped the wires on the two sensors on the back of the head and the temp guage is now working, oil temp sensor wire was earthing out as the stud has broken on the sensor so that will be sorted when i get a new sensor and the fuel guage decided to work yesterday and today so cant fault find that until it plays up again lol!

had fun when my gear linkage popped off in the middle of a busy junction as well so another job added to the list ha ha

thanks very much for your help

cheers
