Hissing Noise After Ignition Shut Off...

Recommended Posts

kilauea

I've just started my 205 up to give it a short run, as it's been off the road for about 18 months. I've started it up from time to time and moved it about in that period.

It fired first time and revs settled down, then drove it up and down the drive a couple of times. When I pulled up I left it idling a few minutes and then shut the door. It immediately cut off as the door banged and I could hear a hisisng noise from the engine. Sounded if it was coming from off side and from the head/inlet manfiold. I can't see any coolant leaking down and it doesn't appear to have lost any. The hiss carried on for ages after the engine had shut off. when I turned it over again 5 mins later the hissing stopped but now it won't start.

I'm hoping it's not head gasket as I changed that only a few years ago and there were no plumes of white smoke like last time.

Do I need to be very worried? I reckon it could use new ignition parts and a service, but does this behaviour point to something worse?

Cheers for advice.

If it cut out and the ignition was still on it'll of probably been the fuel pump still running and you can hear fuel as it passes through the fuel rail/regulator.

Even igniton off it carried on for easily 5 minutes, until I turned it over and it stopped straight away,

You think re-torquing the head bolts would be an idea? Where do you think a leak would cause a loud hiss there?

I also noticed when i checked the dipstick there was oil right up it. Do you it could be blocked breathers and the hiss was making it's way out of the crank case someplace?

Brake servo vac leak. Does it do it everytime? If it does take the vac hose off and block it on the inlet side with something and see if it still happens.

it didn't sound like it was near the firewall, more like between head and inlet but I will give it a try. Ta'.

There's a air hose under the inlet manifold that goes to SAD device, i have seen them split whether that is your cause am unsure.

I will have a look. I can't remember if I replaced that when I did all the bbm coolant hoses.

That's the baker hoses for the SAD device.

The hose am talking about splitting is the bottom hose on the picture.

No, I don't recall buying those, so I'll put them on shopping list.

Cheers.

Inspect them first they may be ok but on the three 205's i have seen that hose on the inlet has been chopped at the end.

Solved!

I got my stethascope out and found it was coming from the fuel pipe onto the regulator. But why was it hissing long after engine shut off?... Because the fuel pump was still running! Turning it on and off again got it to shut down.

Faulty relay?

I would put it down to dodgy French electrics if it's ok now keep an eye on it.

yup, I would replace the fuel pump relay, unlikely to be anything wrong with the wiring, its a very simple trigger system.

no spark = no fuel.

Cheers folks. New relay it is.

Oddly enough the one on my saab went this week too. Is fuel pump relay failure known to be contagious?

Shall I put it in quarantine till it's sorted?
