Slide Hammer Advice

Recommended Posts

sport1901966

Hi All,

Looking to buy a slide hammer mainly for general use, but as you may expect at some point I expect to be tackling the always enjoyed torsion bar removal.

I've come across a few different weights - 2.4kg, 3.1kg, 5.4kg

The 2.4kg comes from screwfix

Clarke seem to be the only ones doing a 3.1 kg

And there are a couple on eBay at 5.4 kg

Now I know from a torsion bar removal perspective bigger is likely to be better. But will either of the lower 2 suffice?

Ideally I'd like to get one for the weekend (which really limits me to the 2.4 I think) but I want one man enough for the future job of torsion bar removal if possible.

Thanks for the input

Get the heaviest you can get, I've used a Sealey one which is heavier than my own Draper one, however one of Tom fenton's pullers would be just as effective I have found, that is if its been apart before.

If the history is unknown I would always expect the worst tbh and have heat and hammers at the ready!

I think rather than a slide hammer a press would be a better investment. Unless the beam has been built recently then you will struggle imo. Plus a press is very handy, beams, wheel bearings, bushes etc, whereas a slide hammer has limited uses.

Thanks for the advice. I do like the idea of a press, but the space investment is much higher (and something I'm lacking!). Also it's a bit more flexible as it can 'pull' things mounted on the car. I'll check out the 5 kg I think.
