205 Gti Parts Are Cheap

Recommended Posts

tartanbloke

Afternoon,

Today, I have decided to jump on my soapbox and express my opinion on the fact that 205 GTI parts are still relatively cheap for what they are and their availability.

In order to uphold this position, I would like to mention the following as an example of just how much cheaper 205 GTI ownership really is.

Around February 2011 I replaced the cambelt, the tensioner and water pump on the Old Girl as well as renewing the coolant. The total cost of the required parts was in the region of around £110 (contitech cambelt kit etc).

Given the fact I have a large family (4 kids) our other vehicle is a rather reliable and large Renault Espace, which is a little bit clatty and low on power at the moment.

Therefore, I decide to replace the dephaser pulley, the cambelt, the Tensioner, the water pump and renew the coolant. However, need to purchase a crank/camshaft locking tool as well unlike the 205 that I used drill bits for.

The total cost ends up at over £340 just for the parts and clearly shows that the long term cost of ownership on a 205 is really cheap in comparison.

That is my opinion and I would welcome any comments.

I agree completely, particularly for service and many of the oily bits. These still are cheap cars to run in terms of basic service and maintenance.

The parts that are getting expensive - compared to what they were, although perhaps not compared to other classics - are various items of discontinued trim.

Japanese cars - for me the worst with regards to service parts costs  .. and plus , for most of them (especially new models) you can't find anything aftermarket in car part store , OE only ..

Hmmm dunno, I bought a pair of wishbones the other day. £130 ouch :(

Considering an audi a4 / a6 multilink front end is £110 for everything

If you look hard enough you can get 16v cambelt kits for peanuts. The tu engines are insanely cheap!

As long as you don't mind doing it again in 12 months time! Decent quality arms are more like £60 each, there are 4 on each corner.

Given the state of the roads in Sheffield, I only put genuine stuff on, particularly when it comes to suspension. Yes you can get QH drop links for half the price but they last a third as long. I try and source genuine parts from eBay in advance of needing it. Full 307 genuine front suspension (except springs) for about £60 :)
