Rev Counter On Xud

Recommended Posts

bicyclerepairman

Eventually, I plan to add a rev counter to my 205TD. I understand that a rev counter was an option available on diesel 205s, and that it was driven by the TDC sensor. When I get around to it, I'll be getting one of those if the engine doesn't already have it fitted, but I'm not sure about any interface electronics required.

2 questions -

Does anyone know what kind of signal the TDC produces, and if it needs any drive electronics?

What kind of input voltage does an aftermarket rev counter need?

Thanks!

This wont answer your questions really but the escort diesels use the alternator current for the rev counter, it may be possible to reproduce the circuit.

quite likely you will already have the engine speed sensor fitted, easiest solution imo would be to obtain a DTurbo or STDT instrument cluster, as they have the gauge.

I can't remember if the wiring was there for the rev counter to plug into, but its only two wires both connected to the gauge, also an earth for the shield wire.

Thanks for the quick replies! I thought about changing the cluster, but not sure if I can deal with the amount of faff. I'd have to change some of the dash, as well as the actual instrument cluster, because pov spec 205s like mine have a different shaped instrument surround.I'm hoping to find a solution using an existing engine sensor and an aftermarket gauge.

Would also be interested if you find a solution for an aftermarket gauge.

W terminals & belt measurements both come to mind.

whats the difference in shape? mines a turbo diesel without rev gauge and was hoping to be able to swap the cluster for one from a dturbo spec level if I can find one

you need the top section of the dash which covers the instrument cluster.

the rev counter equipped models look like this, which specifically pictured is the gti, the xs and STDT have the same type, as does the DTurbo IIRC?

other models use this type

not a difficult task to swap them over.

ah yeah thanks for that, mine has the bottom style, and gti style steering wheel.

Like you said easy job, I had mine apart yesterday to address a different issue

306 diesels also use a rev counter driven off a TDC sensor, wiring schematic is in any 306 Haynes to cover it if you need it. Would be pretty sure the 205 wiring will be the same, not inc numbers and colours of wires. You would need to check however your gearbox has the hole in the top of the bellhousing for the tdc sensor and also your flywheel has the correct pickup points. From memory its 2 cutouts at 180 degrees to each other on a 306 TD flywheel. It generates a square wave signal.
