Ecu & Coolant Sensors

Recommended Posts

Ciaran76

Hi

My mechanic thinks replacing these two sensors will clear up a starting issue - I don't suppose anyone could tell me the part numbers?

Thanks

Ciaran

they are one and the same thing, the blue one.

pug/citroen part number is 0242 46, gsf part number 929BM0140, bosch part number 0 280 130 026

facet part number is 7.3128, which cross references to several hundred applications.

I think he means the engine coolant temperature sensor that tells the ECU whether it is hot or cold and adjusts the fueling accordingly. Should have a blue plug on it and is located next to the big mushroom shaped oil pressure sender at the back of the head under the air filter box (phase 2 XU).

They are Bosch units and are the same as the BMW e36.

Have you fitted it yet and did it work? A minefield of part no's and then it says "There may be alternatives".

2 sensors... hmmm bet he's looking at the Temp gauge and switch for the dash light and gauge!

Sounds like your mechanic hasn't a cllue.

The Coolant Temp sensor as mentioned is the blue one (near those two)

It's easy to test it with a multi meter.

If you get a short circuit, it's that that's f**ked.

Should read about 300ohms or something.

Give the symptoms of the starting issue and I (we) might be able to help.

Borrowed from the 306gti6 forum FAQ page, its actually for the green 1920 K9 sender, but its the same resistance values.

To be fair to him, he doesn't really know much about 205's - he's a Volvo & BMW specialist. Hard to find a 205 mechanic in Belfast unfortunately.

Symptoms - I have to turn the car over 5 or six times in the morning / evening to get it started. He suggested replacing the blue plug to see if that would make a difference. In the last year I've replaced battery and alternator. It's only got this bad in the last month or two. I'm also getting horrendous MPG! less than 15, although my daily journey is only 4 miles.

Sounds like you need to do the basics, test everything, as detailed in the haynes manual, to start with all you need is a multimeter.

A fuel pressure gauge would be useful also.

I'll be honest, my mechanic knows more than me!

I don't have any knowledge of what goes on under the bonnet and with 3 young kids I don't have a second this past while to tinker with the car.

I've tried but there is no one I've come across that's been recommended.

To be fair to him though, he's always been able to sort any problem I've previously had.

if he really is good on old BMW's, he really shouldnt have any issues whatsoever, tell him to treat it like a mid 80's BMW, they used Jetronic AFM's and the very same ecu temperature sender, a few even used the very same tachymetric relay.

as did many Porches, 924/944.

Whats the plugs look like?

While you're at it, check the condition of the spark, If it's orange, you have a bad connection somewhere,

What has he done so far? Horrendous MPG and poor starting to me sounds like either the temp sensor as he suggested or simply down to poor set up of dizzy position, AFM setting and idle screw adjustment. Sometimes pays to start from scratch with the set up of these cars before swapping out parts on a whim. He should be fine with a basic set up from scratch, as said earlier its not much different than any early 80's car and its detailed in the Haynes how to do if he isn't sure.

Did changing the coolant sensor help solve your starting issues in any way?

Did you get this sorted? My suggestions (as a relative newb around here) are, you could well have a couple of issues - the low MPG does sound like the ECU temp sensor - but the starting could be a dodgy ignition amp. I'm thinking of fitting one of these: Maplin/Velleman Ignition Amp Kit (VE00A) - £11.

Maybe someone else could clarify, from what I understand, a worn distributor rotor can also lead to poor starting...

I haven't had a chance, got the sensor here but not had time to leave it in. Going to try and leave it in next week for an oil service as well as getting drivering lights replaced.
