Gti6 Diagnostic Results - Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

James_K

Several months ago, my 205 gti6 developed an annoying hesitation/misfire above 5,000rpm (accompanied by K-light flashing) and its got progressively worse – apparent at lower revs now also.

I’ve been around the houses replacing things like plugs, coils and various sensors, with no effect. So I finally got a diagnostic port wired into the loom and got it hooked up to Peugeot planet to try and get to the bottom of it.

First thing I noticed was there were no faults registered if the car was ticking over or even revving gently. However, if it is taken up to around 4-5k revs it starts throwing out faults. First time I tested it gave the following:

Permanent fault – steering sensor (no PAS so to be expected?)

Intermittent fault – Vehicle speed sensor function

Intermittent fault – Coil 1 control function. Open circuit or short circuit to earth

Intermittent fault – battery voltage

Intermittent fault – Coil 3 control function. Open circuit or short circuit to earth

Intermittent fault – Coil 4 control function. Open circuit or short circuit to earth

Intermittent fault – No. 3 injector control function. Open or short circuit to earth

Second time (next day) I had the following results (again no issues at idle, faults only generated when revved)

Intermittent fault – idle regulation stepper motor control function. Open circuit (this is correct as it can idle badly on start up)

Intermittent fault – Coil 3 control function. Open circuit or short circuit to earth

Intermittent fault – Coil 4 control function. Open circuit or short circuit to earth

Peugeot planet says to check the loom, connectors etc. for each of these issues. My auto electrical knowledge isn’t great, could it be as simple as a bad connection/earth somewhere on the loom?

I find it a bit odd that the errors aren’t consistent and they only appear when the car is revved. Could there be something else causing this? The conversion was professionally and tidily done in the last 12 months (not by me).

I was thinking of getting an auto electrician to check all the connectors and loom etc.

Any idea what I should do next or had a similar experience?

thanks

what senors did you replace as that seems to be showing the crank sensor and the coil packs

cheak all your earths are good and clean

maybe the plugs on then coil packs are loose or slightly damaged which is why it only happens when reving and the engine i vibrating more? only a guess tho

I changed the crank and cam sensor. I will check the coils, but they're brand new. I think it's more related with the increased electrical load at higher revs, if that makes any sense..

I would definatley be looking at earth points before anything else. That or the regulator in the alternator is acting up. Have you tried revving it with no alternator belt on but a fully charged battery.

Hadn't thought of the alternator being the issue. I'll check the earths then try taking the belt off.

cheers

"Intermittent fault – battery voltage"

As Richie suggested......

My mum's 206 cc showed similar faults shortly before the alternator gave up completely.

Richie & Emmy, I think you may be right with the alternator being the problem.

I removed the belt and it revved more cleanly, without any of the coil pack faults showing. I'm still getting warnings on the injectors though - not sure whether this is due to poor voltage from the battery as its only generating 11v without the alternator.

I've got a new alternator on the way, hopefully that will cure it.

thanks for your help

Thought I'd finish this post off in case anyone has the same issue again, I changed the alternator this morning and the car now runs absolutely perfectly again. I'd never have thought that it could cause hesitation and all the other faults, but it's now pulling like a train again.

thanks

Awesome News. I have a 6 with a hesitation here and there and thought it may be that too. Ill investigate further. Thanks for finishing off the post
