Can Original Keyfobs Be Sold On/reprogrammed?

Recommended Posts

gavbrum

After fitting my new toad alarm I've got the 2 original keyfobs sitting in a drawer.

As far as I'm aware they both work although i'd like any info on how to double check. Not been used in about a year.

Noticed a key fob went for £39 on eBay recently so I'm up for selling them if they are any use to anyone but not sure how/if they could be reprogrammed or made compatible with another car. I'd like to do this before putting them into the for sale section.

Cheers,

Gav

Do to still have the sensor in the roof? (Little red globe thing in with the interior light)

If so, any phase 2 can accept this (both parts)

Could you not just try them out?

Don't quote me on this, but my guess is the Toad Alarm would have utilised some of the existing wiring for things like the central locking. Thus, the originals should still lock and unlock?

I believe the fobs are paired to the sensor on the roof as mentioned, don't believe they can be reprogrammed. If they do work, probably would be some quick cash.

You can check that the remote is giving a signal out by pointing the infra red eye into your mobile phone camera and pressing the button, you will see it flash.

As said, the original fobs are matched to the receiver in the roof, and are - AFAIK - useless without as they cannot be reprogrammed like the later 106/306 items can.

Assuming that a complete monkey didn't install the Toad alarm, the original central locking system should still be intact and working, so the fobs should still work as before if you want to test them.

If these are the bog-standard '80s PSA infra-red fobs, which typically work from about 5ft away only, then they certainly can - easily - be reprogrammed. Inside both receiver and fob there's a chip, with some tracks soldered and some tracks left open. All they need to do is match - so break some tracks, bridge some of the open ones. I mucked about with 'em on my s2 CX years ago, and I know they were the same as 405s. I'll see if I can get a bit more detail. Edited by TooMany2cvs

Interesting... I'd be interested to hear more certainly.

I don't know about the CX's, but certainly the 205 and 405 ones are interchangeable, so sounds like it should work.

They're the early single button IR fobs, not the later two button fobs from 306's etc.

Yep, they're the ones I'm thinking of. Look like a cross between a bar of soap and a little rectangular torch, separate from the key. They're also on BXs and probably other stuff - good ol' PSA parts bin.

Crap image, but...

Yes that's the one, although later variants (eg Phase 2 405) used a fob that's part of the key (which is what I've retrofitted into my 205)

That's the earlier type fob as used on Phas 2 205 GTi's and Phase 1 405's.

That's the receiver inside and the later type fob as used on Phase 2 405's.

Wondered why they were going for £39 on ebay if they couldn't be reprogrammed.

I s'pose for a complete working set of fob(s) and receiver, that would be decent value.
