Mi16 Mpg

Recommended Posts

samthornton1990

Hi all,

haven't been on here in while but I am yet again considering a 205 for a daily, I've got it down to a 205 and a 306 d turbo.

Just interested to know what the mpg of an mi16 converted 205 is? Does running a diesel box help improve?

Or would I be better putting a 1600 16v in one as I know they can acheive 40mpg on a good run.

Basically I am going to France for summer (fingers crossed) and the Passats going so I want something small and fun when I come back but I want vaguely good mpg. If an MI16 205 could average on 40mpg I would be swayed.

I know an 8 valver will, and a bodied gti6 will.

1.9 and xsara boxes respectively, I doubt you will with a 1600 box unless you do the trip at 50 mph!

Yeah that's what I've been thinking. Just looking into it more and more now. Old french cars are addictive!

2700 miles across France last summer in a 205 mi16 on throttle bodies.

Approximately 500 litres of fuel.

Best 34mpg -

worse....well throttle bodies sound nice (addictive) don't they!

When it was a standard engine, standard inlet but just cams I got 37mpg at a constant 130kmh.

Really???

Something is amiss with my lump then!!!

I'm lucky to be getting half of that with my bodied '6 lump and Xsara box!!

I managed 32mpg tops with my 8valve on a 1600 box, would a 1900 with a 1900 box achieve 40mpg?

You're on about the noise pedal pusher aren't you???

As previously mentioned, throttle body noise is soooo addictive!!! (Wanting to go and warm car up just to go for a blast again now!! Good thing ie had a drink now and can't probably!!)

But seriously, even when I'm having a "drive it like a granny" week or two, she doesn't allow me that kind of mileage. She also gets very choked up and hates me!!

Did a trip to NEC and back the other week and the motorway journey was painful due to the Xsara 'box and the high revs at 60/70 all the way. Think I may have seen just over 30mpg on that trip??

(Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread)

My 1900 lump with standard 'box was giving me 35-40 mpg on a good average run week!!

no, an mi16 0n motronic will be better.

yes, mine can do and it runs MP3.1 and a mild cam, Anthony's similarly setup 1.9 on Jetronic will also do this as its had the time spent making sure it runs right.

DCC's old gti6 was very good on bodies, helped massively by a Sandy brown map, he's very very good at doing these engines and I'm always hearing about customers that report better fuel usage and laptimes when they move to his engines.

On a steady run at 60-70mph I can get high-30s in mine (standard mi16 with 2-row management and mi16 box)

Monotronic? Is that like single point injection? How do you find these things out when looking over a car?

MOtronic, not MONOtronic.

i.e the standard 405 mi16 injection system in Ryan and Simon's cases, or a ZX 1.9 8v volcane in my case.

I could live with that.

What are the 1600s like on juice?

To average 40mpg you'll need to be exceeding 40mpg for a lot of the time. What sort of journeys do you do?

I do 25 mile trips weekely and if I go riding even further...Kind of used to diesels thats why i am finding it hard to think about running a petrol

I get 41mpg at a constant 100-105 km/h. That's with 4:43 cwp and Mi16x4 5th gear.

You're looking to buy correct? I used to get over 40mpg out of the 6' easily, on a long journey had 43-44 :D

Will be in a few months. Just weighing up my options... i dont exactly drive the passat sensibly and still return 40 ish to the gallon even when giving it the beans

A 205 will not return the mpg you're after.

The official road test figures are

1.6 29.9mpg

1.9 28.1mpg

These are the combined road test figures from Autocar and Motor in 1986 and 87 respectively.

With a car like this you shouldn't be considering mpg, that's what your other car is for!

I regularly got 300-350 miles to a tank, I drove it like I wanted, everywhere, but I do remember getting 220 to a tank once - bloody noise pedal... I remember Anthony saying he could hear me from 5-6 miles away. he could pinpoint me when I got to the trafficlights by his house. I miss those noise makers.

I know i shouldnt be considering it but i am at that age where I can afford one. 106s also tempt me, little rallys do ok on juice from what I have heard... ill do some.more reading. Cheers guys

Pretty sure my Mi managed 32-34mpg on my commute, and that's with a mildly cammed/Motronic/1.6 box & 'normal' driving. Vaguely remember getting to the 'Ring on about a tank and half with 80-90mph driving too. Not bad considering the performance that you get, just don't ask about the MPG (or Laps per tank) at the 'Ring......it's pants.

HAha I miss the car it was the most fun thing ive ever driven. I would struggle to run one i think if they did as bad as my last oe did. Hence why i am asking this. Realistically a d turbo offers everything but i miss having a petrol

I was happily getting 40+ mpg out of my 205 Mi16 with a 1.6 gearbox. It was stripped out inside so weighed about as much as half a fart, but (like everyone else) I wasn't shy of putting my foot down in it form time to time just to hear the noise. Historically I have always been good at getting mileage out of things like fuel/tyres/brake pads and so on on my cars mind. Silky smooth driving. :P
