Vts Vs D Turbo I Need Convincing

Recommended Posts

jamie_1992

right the xs is having and engine change the qusestion is what???

the sensible thing is to put a 306 d turbo engine in and use as my cheap ride to work but i have a saxo vts sitting at home with a very sweet engine and as i love how the xs drives with is close ratio box and free reving engine but wanting a little more reliability im wanting to put that in

iv been trying to gather as much info for both regarding cost/time and effort

so guys i need to be convinced as to which to go for........

I'm putting a d-turbo in my 1.0 (same thing really!)

My shopping list of parts is fairly massive as I'm trying to do it properly.

Engines are cheap but all service parts are the same, everything needed for the conversion is available off the shelf even the diesel turbo 205 exhaust apparently mates up with no Re-angling.

However in my opinion a front mount intercooler is a must.

I went in a very mildly tuned dt 205 the other day and was amazed I'd say nearly 1.9 gti speed but 50mpg when you wanted!!

I'd look at swapping to gti subframe and wishbones at the same time.

Check my topic in non xu/tu section, loads of info

Thanks I currently added up basic costs to around £700 and yes a fmic is a must

Will you save £700's worth of fuel? (plus insurance for a second vehicle, and tax which will be £220, same as the gti6) given the MPG of a DTurbo is mid 50's and a gti6 driven sensibly will be high 30's?

Not forgetting this country taxes diesel higher and is around 7 or 8 pence per litre more expensive.

Also remember that a diesel driven on boost still uses a lot of fuel.

Will a 90 bhp DTurbo which weighs say 30 kilos more than an 85 bhp TU, be any quicker?

got to be the most anti XS engine out there! But then who cares its your car. You have you're GTI for hooning about in, sell then XS and just buy a Diesel?

I did a quick calculation when I was looking for a family car a year or so back, I know it's not about conversions, but taking into account the fact a diesel version of the same petrol car was quite a lot more to purchase, then there's the increase in fuel price, it would have taken me around 4 years to re-coup the difference, and to be honest I don't tend to keep cars that long, so at the end of the day it didn't really make much difference which car I bought.

Slightly back on topic, if you love how the XS drives, why change it?! Surely £700 would put right any problems, and subsidise any difference in fuel price for a long time! If it ain't broke don't fix it!

700 is a set of satchell bodies, save a bit more, ecu...

Get it mapped properly, still get decent mpg plus awesome soundtrack.

Sandy's best tu5 still does 40 mpg odd, and thats more powerful than your git6 :D

I think the XS engines are quite reliable actually, and in my opinion far more fun to drive than a turbo diesel.

The fuel consumption really wont be uch better than an XS when driven sensibly (except for motorway driving), so I dont think that would be vaild justification for the conversion.

who said it was going to be 90 bhp lol

the old xs engine is rather tired having done 140000 miles it misses and struggles to start when warm

i am currently being drawn down the vts option as its like a refined modern day xs engine

im not up to scratch with my engine codes lol when you say tu5 is that what my current engine is?

must have more work than a set of bodies an ecu to get more power than a gti6?

of course, its probably about £11k odd, if not more, and pushes out over 225 bhp from a 100 TU5J4, that's a 106 gti or saxo vts engine if you didn't know.

your current lump is a TU3S alloy block motor, which weighs 23 kilos less than a TU5J4, which is only 120 bhp stock, and as standard has a chocolate teapot gearbox,

A 1.6 205 gti lump weighs about the same as the tu5j4, pushes out 115 bhp, has a BE box, though will use a little more fuel as its old electronics.

My point was that if properly mapped and most importantly also if not standard then properly built pug engines can do 40 mpg.

thanks for making sense of those random letters and numbers lol and yes i understand the point you were making

the reason for not running the saxo being £1400 to insure it (my gti6 is only £500) also i dont like saxo's and i want to keep using my 205 as its a "babe"

I've got the saxo vts/ 106 gti engine in my Gt. I was initially a bit worried about the extra weight, as its not a light engine. but to be honest, its made it a little more planted at the front. it's bloody good fun when I want it to be, but also handles my massive commute and I get a decent almost 40mpg even with a heavy right foot. if it doesn't give you a smile on the redline then you need to call a doctor.

I'd just go with the spaxo engine if you're not too bothered about ripping it apart. That way you've already got most - if not all - of the parts you'll need and you get the more modern and refined electronics without the risk of accidentally filling a diesel with petrol when you first go to fill up. :P
