Replacing Standard Front And Rear Discs/pads On 1990 1.9

Recommended Posts

roohunt

I'd like to replace the discs and pads all round on my 1990 1.9 Series 1.5.

This has been addressed several times on the forums but there doesn't seem to be a proper definitive answer or a guide to the process, most threads are relating to big brake upgrades etc and I just want to swap like for like - I've also looked at the Haynes PDF linked to and I know i'm being a bit of a muppet but i'm incredibly new to amateur mechanics and there seems to be various different kinds of 205 being referred to in there and no direct instructions to just replace the discs/pads (i may be being short sighted of course).

I'd just like to know what exactly is involved with replacing the discs and pads at both ends - Is it the straightforward removal of a few bolts when you take the wheels off or am I going to be tinkering with things that I really can't afford to fail on me when i'm out on the road? A step by step guide would be incredibly helpful if there's one out there somewhere?

Any help very much appreciated

that should get you sorted :)

all 1.9's use the same braking system, girling front caliper, bendix rear, I would highly reccomend getting a new rear brake pad fitting kit, they are available from most motorfactors, a very common brake caliper on the rear of late 80's early 90's french hatches.

you wont need any special tools, just your normal spanners and sockets, sometimes a punch for the rear pad retaining bar.

Thank you, that's a big help - What comes with the rear pad fitting kit?

How long would you think it would take to do all four corners? (Taking into account my total lack of experience)

An impact screwdriver can be handy for undoing the often stubbern screw that hold the discs in place.

I'm about to buy new 1.9 front discs & pads for 1st time (1990 H 205 1.9) and so have some novice questions please.

I'm looking at yellow stuff pads but see 2 types listed on ebay (for Girling and Bendix calipers) both state they are compatible with the 1990 car and both pad types look different in the pictures. I have also seen mention of Lucas braking systems. Welsh Pug states all 1.9's use the Girling caliper on the front so I am inclined to go with this. Just looking for confirmation I guess as I don't want to buy the wrong type pad because the MOT is looming closer.

The pads in the photos are also pictured with wires coming off them, is this for brake wear indicators? as my car is non ABS - was ABS fitted to any of the later 1.9's?

My car feels like it is going to break when you apply the brake pedal over 30-40mph but I have no wear indication on the dash, so I am assuming the pads have enough material but that the discs are badly warped, the car came like this.

As always - your help/advice is appreciated, thanks

What's the symptoms that make you think it's going to break when slowing? I'm sure last thing you want to do is change all the brakes and still have same problem. Chances are the wires will be wear wires as abs sensors/wiring wouldn't come with the pads. I'm just in process of changing mine ATM and fronts are girling but worth having a look at calliper see if you can see any brand marks on them to confirm. Use a wire brush to clean them off a bit if you struggle to see anything under the rust and brake dust.

The car shudders under braking, it feels like "classic warped" discs, the guy I bought the car from has been running his own Peugeot garage for 30 years and he advised me at the time that the front brakes would need looking at, the car was put through an MOT same day and passed with one advisory, anti-roll bar bush or drop link if I remember right. The car is fine in all other respects, everything feels right, just the front brakes shudder like mad under even moderate braking. The front discs also have a lip around their circumference. I'd like to upgrade anyway with grooved discs and and a good pad, front then rear, then I will know myself all is in order. Are your front calipers stamped Girling then?

The brake test on the mot for judder is always a hard one to fail it on in my opinion, as the mot means "bare minimum" I'm a tester and been pulled up by vosa on failing a car for brake bind before. I couldn't turn the wheel by hand when jacked up yet when he retested it the readings on the brake rollers in his opinion didn't read enough for it to be deemed a significant brake bind its comical really. But like you say it symptoms do fit for warped discs. And yes mine has girling written on them if you turn the wheel on a lock and look on the caliper you should see it stamped just below the brake hose if I remember correctly?

Unfortunately very few jobs on a 205 or any car of this vintage are as straightforward as removing a few bolts. Well they are but removing bolts is usually far more complicated than it seems.

You should still be okay though as even I've managed it.

Paul, yip, no worries, I just needed to know which pads to get as I'm still new to the 205, changing discs & pads is easy peasy, and I don't look on the 205 as being even remotely vintage by the way, but then I'm old ;-) The good thing is that everything on this car is possible, almost, if you know what your doing, the same thing can't be said for "modern" cars.

You were right of course, was Girling Calipers, jobs done now and cured the juddering under braking, the solid vents and pads that came off the front didn't look too bad, disks were definitely warped though.

Excatly how to upload pictures? thanks mate

create an account and upload the pictures, once done right click, choose an appropriate size (something like 800x600) click on it, then right click and copy image location.

open up the "reply to this topic" box and click the "Image" box in the top row and paste the URL in there, job done :)
