Slackening Aux Belt

Recommended Posts

FireFly

I had a little poke/look around the alternator today but couldn't see how to release it in order to get some slack on the belt so I can replace it (the belt).

I took a couple of pictures so if someone could just point out how its held in place.

I know there supposed to be a 10mm adjuster nut on the front of it which I did loosen along with the 13mm on the side of it - this bolt does nothing. It's attached to nothing and in no way does it affect the tension of the belt.

It's worth nothing the aux belt is in a very bad way which is why I'm desperate to change it, maybe this has some effect on the starting of the car as seen in my other thread: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=148234

Anyway, here's some lovely pictures with some questions:

1) Does the bolt circled in green release it so it can flex toward engine and therefore slacked belt?

2) The orange circled bolt hits the radiator when try to remove it.

3) The 10mm adjuster and 13mm do nothing.

4) The 10mm adjuster and 13mm do nothing.

Don't take the orange bolt out, that just bolts the bracket to the block, slacken the green bolt to allow the alternator to pivot backwards.

However it looks like the belt is a bit short, so the adjuster is maxxed out, cut it off and get a belt slightly longer than that one.

I did advise one of the previous owners the belt didn't look great, guess he didn't get round to changing it.

Just the green bolt alone is it Mei?

I've got two replacement belts so one of them should be all right. :)

Just crack the green one off yeah, don't need to loosen it much, use the adjusters as normal when fitting new belt then nip the bolt bolt back up.

IIRC the 306 TD crank pulley is larger diameter than the 205 NA D one, which might explain why that looks a bit tight.

Strange because I loosened that big bolt off (green circled) about 10 whole turns and the alternator wouldn't budge, maybe it needs convincing with a hammer or something.

Obviously I don't want to just cut the belt off unless I can get another on.

If it is at max (or min adjustment as it looks, max would have the 10mm bolt wound right through the other plate) remove the 13mm nut on the opposite end of the adjuster bar after removing the 10mm adjustment bolt (both in your last picture above) & remove the adjuster end comletely to get some more movement for the alternator towards the block, hopefully then you'll be able to remove the old belt.

IIRC the alternator will be resting on the block before the adjuster hits the end of the slot.

You can see the 10mm adjuster bolt is already loose but can't tell if the alternator body is resting against the block or if the bracket has just hit the bottom of the slot.

have you undone the locknut,a crowbar usually helps once the nuts are loose
