How Much Bhp Do You Think I'll Get ?

Recommended Posts

JakeMathias

A lot of people are telling me different things but i'll put the spec of my engine and box up on here and see what you all think.

GTI6 2.0 16v

Ported and polished head/manifold

264 Piper cams

3 angle valve seats

Weber twin 48 carbs

Nodiz ignition controller

Xsara VTS box

Quaife ATB diff

Straight through with Magnex back box

Now if this was all set up correctly what do you think i could get ? also open to suggestions with any other mods you think i may benefit from ?

ITB's!!! Make the best use of the cams and put bodies on her!!!

Bhp read outs are a hit and miss thing, its all about the curve really and how she feels... Where there can be a lot of different readouts from the same car at different rollers so don't get too hung up on the final reading!!

half of the parts you list wont make one bit of difference...

who did the head and are there larger valve cutouts to allow proper cam timing to be dialled in?

so your telling me i'll be running 167bhp.. i should bloody hope not ! i'll get 200bhp easily on the information i've gathered so far. Well known mechanic thats built a lot of track cars, not that i know of so maybe i should look into that. Excuse my ignorance but i've not got much mechanical knowledge and this is my first project so i'm learning as i go along !

Welshpug wasn't saying you won't see any increase, he was saying half the parts listed wont make any difference. The cams will, and if the head has been done well then that may too.

Edit:

Sorry, I didn't see the carbs on the original post. They will add more torque than anything, but with the cams then it will give you gain...

Supercharged-turbo-bodies!!!

That's a bottomless pit of a question which all depends on how big your budget is!!

From a personal point of view, I'd ditch the carbs and use throttle bodies and mappable management.

Using vernier pulleys on any engine to get the valve timing spot on is a good idea. Different cam specs have different valve timing so vernier pulleys are a good investment....as long as there is room for adjustment to dial the cams in properly and cope with their lift (i.e. big enough pockets in the pistons).

It's going to be hard for anyone to tell you what power to expect without knowing how good the head work is and what's been done though to be honest.

BHP is pub talk really, making it drive right and respond as you want it to is where it's all at.

Well i'm going to stick with the carbs for now and maybe next year i'll invest in some nice throttle bodies. I think i'll invest in some vernier pulleys and also look into the valve clearances ! I would love to supercharge it but then thats a lot of money so that wont be any time soon !

It should be between 190 and 200bhp but in all honesty the head work is a waste of time and money.

Mine made about 225 without porting the head.

Jake

With your mods and the fact you got mappable ignition and 48 mm carbs you will easily get 200 bhp minimum. With the potencial of more if tuned and set up properly.

I think those cams are pretty timid. Id expect 180 ish. A gain of 15-20 over a standard healthy engine.

what are running ? yeh i think i'll make 200bhp easy. I could guarantee i'd get more than 180bhp, the friend i got the cams off of was running 194bhp with 264 cams, dolorto carbs and a dizzy adaptor...

Is this really the way this forum is going these days ffs? This thread is full of crap. Don't come on here where we actually know about these things, asking a question only to then argue it like you know better!

You can't guarantee anything really can you, your friend is either not very well educated on these things, or a good salesman.

It really depends on lots of factors, like how well the carbs & ignition are set up and then even more so, the rollers/operator you use and even then what's the point, you can't race that anyway. Get it done and see how it drives, if you like it and are happy with it, great. What's the car being built for?

You will not get a real 200bhp, or anything near. Cams are mild, head porting doesn't gain you much if anything, carbs might a little if properly set up but the size of them doesn't mean anything! 3 angle valve seats, diff, box & exhaust won't net you any real gains. 180ish would be my educated guess. My rebuilt engine makes around that (tested on a modern, calibrated set of rollers by a reputable person) and it's on proper management & bodies, you won't get any more with your carbs, ignition etc even with the cams.

That's if it doesn't bend the valves at first attempt at over 3k...

I'm going to peg it at 180bhp. Unless the manifold for the carbs is a bit crap and too short, and then I'll go with 150.

You've already got adjustable cam pulleys although you've got bugger all valve clearance to actually advance the cams. As said already you're cams are mild and unless you can get someone who knows what they're doing you're carbs may end up being more trouble than they're worth.
