How To Remove Offset Washer Stripped Torque?

Recommended Posts

shooter mcgavin

Any tips on removing the torque bolt that holds the off set washer on the rear beam, I cleaned all around the washer with a small pic, gave it a good soaking with deblock lube, tapped the torque bit in with a tapometer and......................... It stripped 1st turn :-(

the threads stripped or the bolt head fudged?

if the latter, chisel it round, the former, drill it out.

Weld a nut to it then undo it with a socket.

No chance you could hammer in the next size up of torx bit once u have given it a bit of heat,

I've done it many times. In order of trying:

1. A sharp centre punch on periphery.

2. Next size torx bit + heat, (as above)

3. Drill it out

A sharp chisel on the edge works 90% of the time, if not I have some left hand drill bits which drill off the head and then bite the thread and wind it right out.

ive always found knocking in the next size up torx bit does the job, plenty of wd40 or similar too

I'll have a go with the chisel on Monday, I've already tried knocking in the next size up to no avail

Argued with mine for a good couple of hours the first time i had it out.

same thing, tried the same techniques to no avail.

Eventually i did as Daviewonder suggested and welded a nut to it, the heat transfer down the threads loosens the deathgrip of rust then the nut (i used a 13mm/M8 i think) gives a better grip than the shi**y torx bolts.
