Thanks a lot for all your help. I normally get good advice on here but not this time. Don't let this forum get like all the others where all you get is people passing of crap advice as the law.

See now you made a fatal mistake in your first post, which is why you've got a ribbing from us as result. Asking for advice about a car you've already won on eBay, and therefore committed to buy. It makes no odds whether you can walk away if not as described, or that you didn't have time to go and view it, they are just poor excuses. Fact is, you've committed to buy it. If it's not as described, you make that decision for yourself when you get there, you don't ask others for opinions that may influence your decision before you get there, as it's not fair on the seller.

That's my opinion. Most of us on here have been dicked about by people with eBay transactions at some point. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth. That's why we are ribbing you.

All I was hoping was that it may have been someone's car on here who could give me some history. Or as someone kindly did for me a while ago stop me from buying a dog that they had already been to see as the seller was a liar. I would have thought that protecting other forum members from dodgy dealers and liars would have been a positive thing to do but it turns out I was wrong. Thanks for the advice at least you have put me my place.

Come on dude, don't take it to heart. The point is you have already bought the car!

In my time on this forum, I don't recall seeing it.

As far as I know, no one really caught herpies from this car.

Hope it turns out to be a good one ;)

To be fair, if any of us actually did know anything about that 205, I'm sure we would have just given you an honest answer. I guess none of who have replied do know the car, so we choose a bit of light piss taking instead. No harm done ;) Plus, our pointless replies kept the topic visible, so if anything we did you a favour by making it more likely that somebody useful would see it and reply :D

For what it's worth, I hope you are happy with what you bought :)

Not everybody that ever owned a 205GTi is on our forum mate! :D If worst did come to worst and the car is clearly 'not as described' then just walk away!!He can't neg you and all you have had is the arse ache of going up there to collect it. I have no idea what you paid for it and what your intentions are with the car but if it was honest, straight and as described then redeem yourself bud and get some decent pics up!!!:):P

Ok here she is in all her glory!! Everything seems fine. Bodywork is in good condition and engine pulls well. Apart from a few trim and interior issues that are easily solved the only problem I have found is that after she was stood for five mins after a good run home she smoked a bit. No signs of smoke when I took her for a test run or on the way home and a soon as you drive off there is no smoke at all. I thought that if it was valve seals it would have smoked worse when being driven. Maybe a breather pipe? No smoke when you use engine braking and then accelerate hard. No signs of bubbles in the header tank and doesnt seem to be using water on the way home? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks

First of all, are you 100% it's smoke and not steam? Remember it's liable to steam with the current cold weather (my Alfa steams like buggery and it had me paranoid for ages, but now I just accept it as normal, cos it's bloody cold up here!).

Secondly, when it comes to failed valve stem seals, the symptoms don't always match what is described as being typical. I had this with my last 1.6 and everyone had me worried that it was the piston rings failing becuase my sypmtoms were closer to failed rings than failed seals. But sure enough, when I took the head apart the seals crumbled like Oxo cubes and after it was put together it was fine.

Glad you got a good one. All that fuss about nothing

Probably early signs of stem seal failure, which most original 205 GTi engines will be suffering from now.

Basically, stem seals tend to show when there's vacuum in the inlet (so idle, overrun) whereas say rings tend to show under load.

If you get someone to follow you, you'll probably get a tiny puff of smoke on overrun/gear change as well when the oil is hot if it's stem seals, but not enough to see in the mirror when driving. It's nothing too much to worry about in the short term, but longer term, you'll probably want to factor in a head rebuild (as usually by the time the stem seals are tired, so are the valve seats, exhaust guides etc)

Thanks guys. I suppose either way if its valve seals or head gasget they both mean head rebuild. Hopefully not rings. Thanks again

My 1.6 that I mentioned before smoked for about 10 years according to the history that came with it. It had a receipt from Peugeot detailing that they investigated the smoking and thought it was the rings failing. There were a few other bits of info in the history over the 10 years that showed it still had the problem on and off over the years, seemingly not very badly though. Then the owner prior to me (was a member on here) had the problem on and off in his year or so of owning it. When I picked it up it was intermittent at the start but then I think one day it must have spat out a fairly big chunk of crispy seal as it suddenly started smoking badly at idle and didn't get any better until I finally took the head off.

So they can go for a long time before you need to bother doing anything. If yours is only smoking a little bit I'd not lose any sleep about it just yet, just enjoy the car.

Thanks for all the info. This is my 4th Gti and I still own three of them. I have always found them pretty bomb proof and when I tested this one all looked good. It was a bit of a worry when I realised it was smoking but with your advice I think I will just leave it until I really have to do something. Thanks again.
