Do I Sell Up, Break, Or Rebuild..

Recommended Posts

Stu

Hi all..

I'm at a cross roads with my 205. For those that don't know, i've had it for over 5 years now, and in that time it has progressed from a road car to a full on track car, going from an Mi injection, to carbs, to GTI-6 etc along the way, its on all 309 running gear, six speed box etc.

Ive found myself not having the time (nor the inclination if im honest) to do the trackdays anymore, so i decided to strip the carbs, buckets, harnesses etc out and sell them on thinking i'd turn it into an B road blaster rather than a full on track car.

Problem is, ive lost motivation with it all together. Ive also got a Renaultsport Clio (182) which is just so good at everything im finding it hard to justify spending cash on the 205 when ive got the 182.

However, its been my faithful road car, track car, and companion for years so really dont like the thought of pulling it apart and breaking it.

Also, given that theres no fuelling/ignition system on it now, no seats/trim etc i know as it stands its worth pennies despite the running gear so wouldnt get a lot if i was to just 'sell up'.

But i cant find the necessary motivation to buy all the bits and pieces to turn it back into a 'comfy spec' road car.

What do i do?

Break it up. Don't think of it as a bad thing - think of it as an organ donor. Your 205 will help the others out there live a little longer :D

Unless you can find someone understand who will give you a reasonable value for it as-is but, let's face it, in this miserable economy and age of skinflints, that's highly unlikely!

Don't say that about the 182 :(

I always have a similar thought when I jump in my 172 Cup. But saying that I only have to sit in the 205 and it makes it all OK again

Because I want some bits, I suggest you break it.

I have considered this tbh mate, and breaking it would release a fair chunk of cash given that pretty much everything sells!

If it gets to that stage bud, ill be in touch...

Yep, its all there still, just needs management and an inlet to get it running. And seats to sit in :P

The other thing is that the bloody thing is like a sieve, body is as solid as a rock but water comes in from the sunroof, tailgate etc which is REALLY annoying!

*sigh* im still torn.. :(

Given the prices that 205 spares are fetching these days I'm surprised there's not a lot more being broken.

For the sake of a loom, ECU, inlet and a set of seats, it seems foolish not to make it run again for such little work and comparatively little money.

The fact that you're still contemplating keeping it rather than tearing it apart speaks volumes IMO.

Head vs heart this one I suspect - head says keep the 182 as it does everything well out of the box, but they lack that "something" which is why the heart I suspect is saying 205.

Yes and no - the spares are starting to sell for good money, but equally, all the cheap cars have largely vanished to the usual serial 205 breakers.

Have a look on eBay - even non-running cars without MOT and needing a fair amount of work are fetching reasonable money now, whereas these cars were just a couple of hundred quid a year or two back.

make a decision on how it drives, not how it sits in the garage in pieces.

Exactly Ant, the only thing putting me off is that interior wise i need everything, even the dash is crap with broken fixings, self tappers everywhere etc..

Could do with a mechanically shagged, rotten car with good trim to break up really.. :(
