General Discussion/banter

how come theres no provision for the above ..

ive only been on a few weeks ,had posts removed for giving info to questions ...

been told to SEARCH the threads when all i wanted was a simple answer or suggestion

what happened to good old forums that had a bit of banter (off thread ) ?

i think it makes for a better forum and helps the newer members to fit in

this isnt meant to offend anyone just an observation

You are 2 (useful) posts away from being able to access Natasha's Off Topics, which is the banter area. Then you can talk bollocks until your heart's content :)

As for being told to do a search, that's normal on here. 99% of things any new members asks has been covered a million times before. It's not us trying to be awkward, we're simply encouraging you to help yourself. If this wasn't done (as is the case on other forums) then we'd simply see the same topics repeated ad-infinitum, with the quality of the info becoming diluted as people lose interest.

Given the forum is over 10 years old, and the cars at their youngest are 18 years old, that simple question has been asked before and is on here somewhere :P

While I agree that most questions will of been asked by now because of the age of the cars and forum. I do feel that sometimes the long term members can be short with their answers to new members, usually some thing like "use the search function" I know it can get repetitive but maybe something like a short brief answer with a link to a search, would be better. This would make the forum seam more friendly and encourage newer members to keep coming back. A few topics of late have been about how quite the forum can be, maybe if we welcomed more than we shunned this would change.

When i first joined this forum a few years ago and started browsing i saw a fair few posts detailing the use of the search function so i used it and found so much info i didn't post anything for ages  By saying that if i hadn't spent loads of time on the search setup i wouldn't have learnt as much about the common issues that can trouble the car as i did :)

I now get criticised on forums like the RS Owners club when i post suggesting the search function gets used a bit more, as it must have rubbed off on me having used it so much/seen it posted on here so often :hehe:

The problem is that some of us may have been here a long time and have been driving these cars a long time.

This forum is a resource of information both real time and in archive format.

Modifying trends come and go.

Some questions are asked on here on a weekly basis or even seasonal eg. when it's raining outside we get of where does my leak come from?

There is an FAQ section currently being written which will allow newbies the chance to find often asked questions.

I think a FAQ section is a great idea, this will really help new comers to the forum.

I enjoy pi55 taking just as much as the next person, but I do think some times you have to let people settle in before giving them both barrels.

Mi16 old Skool cool

I quite like the harsh and unrelenting attitude towards repetitive questions but thats just me. Afterall, lots of current members such as myself, have only been on for a couple of years and faced the same hurdles when we joined - But after the initial 'Why does nobody like me!?' moment you come to realise it is beneficial as a whole because repeat after repeat of the same topic just dilutes the information and as such doing a search becomes harder and harder.

The most useful thing anyone can learn about this forum is forget the in-house search function - only use the google search.

Just to recap for anyone new;

Type "site:forum.205gtidrivers.com' then a space and your search terms into google and be amazed by vast array of info!

I have shared this trick with members of various other forums (civinfo is a minefield without it!) and it really is essential to finding anything.

Agree with some of that, and disagree with some of it. Sometimes we can be a bit of an unwelcoming bunch (I cringe at some responses to newbies at times, even though I'm guilty of being a c*nt at times too), but it's luck of the draw really. Although I take quite harsh stance on not spoon feeding info, there are times when I will reply to obvious questions, and it just depends what mood I'm in at the time (or how much time I have to kill). Unless you are one of the lazy twats that post topics with crap titles like "Help please", cos then I'm going to ignore you  . But I absolutely believe that we should not be doing the leg work for others when a google search can often provide much more info much more quickly. Spoon feeding the info undermines that, and it doesn't give the person any incentive to search in future.

So in summary - what Sam306 said :P
