Whats The Best Peugeot Engine For Big Power?

Recommended Posts

Andy205

What are peoples opinions on which Peugeot engine to use for big power potential?

I'm currently stripping my 205 GTI-6 to transplant everything into a mint Dimma shell which I am fully restoring, leaving me with another 205 shell.

I'm the workshop supervisor at Zcars and as some may know we speacialise in mid engine transplants etc.

I'm thinking of cutting my old 205 shell and fitting one of our Saxo kits ( probably modified slightly ) to make a mid engined RWD track beast.

Obviously with the engine in the back, turbo and super charger optioins and relatively easy with lots of space for pipe work etc. But what engine should I go for to get the most power at reasonable cost... I'm no millionaire :)

The Dimma should be done this summer providing I actually find the time so it'll be over the next couple of years I expect. Just thought I'd ask peoples thoughts.

If you're after the Most power at a reasonable cost and the engines all custom mounted anyway I'd be looking elsewhere for an engine, f*** peugeot! :P

Lol, its an option as Peugeot aren't renown for big power fiures but I'm a little patriotic to Peugeot for some reason or just in general when it comes to transplants.

Plus... My GTI-6 has had some abuse from me and "touch wood" never really cost me anything!

Where the hell would I find a T16 though?

ES9 sounds like a good place to start with around 200hp as standard!

built a S16 turbo. Stock internals, GT30 and een DP-engineering decmpressionplate. Good for at least 400+ bhp (Here in NL we had a 466 bhp one). Oh, and don't use a Be3 gearbox if you're planning to go over 400 bhp. It won't last for 300 miles, hahahaha.

High boost supercharged gti6 lump seems quite popular.

first run:

Geupload op 28 dec 2008

Peugeot 205 XU10J4 Turbo (GT3076R), DP-Engineering turbo manifold and downpipe, Vems PnP XU10J4 management. STOCK engine internals with just a decompression plate!

Goal; trying to reach 400 hp on the WHEELS on a stock block.

This is a video of the first run above 400 whp; 403 to be exact (around 450 - 460 engine hp). Boost pressure 1.55 bar

and a second run made 405 whp (equals 466 bhp)

How long do you expect that to last for? Surely it won't hold up to a days abuse at a circuit?

it wasn't build for trackdays. The car hadn't even a rollcage. However he did used it for 1 trackday. Only @ 1 bar because of the rain. The owner drove approximately 6.000 km (= 3750 miles) on the road, before he sold it to a German Peugeotdealer, which was going to use it as advertising purpose end and 1/4 mile sprints.

Wow, I'm surprised it managed to hold together for the power run let alone 6000km! :o

Very impressive.

Good to know you can get that power from stock internals. Leaves the door open for affordable power.

300 at the wheels in a 205 would make a wicked car!

I looked into this sort of thing for my 106, looked at the peugeot options and decided that the best options would be either a Type R accord setup (2.2l 210 bhp out of the box) or a volvo T5 as these are 240 bhp out of the box with a specialist re-mapping to 300bhp without any physical modifications (apparently). Figures like that from a pug lump would cost a hell of a lot more than an old volvo to cut up.

Did Zcars not do a saxo with a mid mounted Honda K20 (maybe even supercharged)a few years back? Forget Peugeot engine and do that to your 205!

Sam

EDIT - just noticed you mention the Saxo at the top - doh!

I've yet to see one of these conversions that actually works well, IMO I would stick it in the front where Peugeot intended, whatever you choose, use your spaceframing experience to sort the front end as you see with mini's maybe, that's if the chassis legs cause any issues which in the most they rarely do.

Good man, you must love your job :)

I really like the ZCars Minis (was looking at the website agin just a few nights ago funnily enough) and have often wondered why there's never been a ZCars 205 along the lines of the Saxo they did. Since the Honda K20 is well established for you guys, and being a bit of a Honda fan myself then that's the way I'd go if it were my project. K20A with ITBs/Supercharger/Turbo (delete as appropriate).

If you want to stick with a Pug lump, why not go for a V6? Worked for the Clio. Stick a cheeky turbo on that and away you go :D

Lol, yeah its a dream job!

We (workshop staff) always talk about why the Zcars saxo kit didn't take off. We put it down to not advertising it in the right places as Saxo's at the time were probably the most modified car out there. Its pretty much been forgotten about but like the mini kit, will fit into most cars the same size as the Saxo.

Maybe you'll see a Zcars 205 at car shows in a year or two :D

The K20 is a good reliable engine, our sandard mini's with Hondas in have our Simpsons exhaust and KnN, wiring loom and DTA 60 ECU and do 235bhp.... and go like stink!

I've driven a supercharged one about 400bhp and it drives amazingly well. Most use the Rotex s/c and dont seem to be very reliable. Plus your looking at a couple of grand just for a decent K20 lump.

I'm sure I can make it handle, its all about the right set up.
