Where To Buy Paint Online?

Recommended Posts

Robbiedundy

Hey, I'm looking into getting my new gti resprayed due to lacquer peel, but instead of keeping it graphite grey I'm changing the colour to miami blue! I'm just wondering are there any recommended places to order paint from? I want to order it because I live in the Scottish Highlands and there's no places I can go to pick it up really.

Also, what's the difference between 2pac paint and normal paint? If anyone could help that'd be excellent!

Cheers,

Robbie.

The guy who I'm thinking about getting to paint it isn't coming to look at the car for a week or so, so I was just trying to get a rough idea of what the paint would cost.

I know it's a big job, but I've got nothing else to do right now ^_^

Try nu agane paints, they are in eBay and mostly do celly, good service.

I got 5 ltrs high build and 2.5lts of anti bloom thinners and 2.5 base coat for under £100 delivered.

Metallic would be more I'm sure

To be fair thoug if you don't know the difference between 'normal' and 2 PAC paint you shouldn't really be buying it.

Let the painter do it, otherwise it could end in disaster.

I'm sure he does have a trade supplier - I was just looking into things before he came.

I do quite like the graphite grey, but miami blue is definately my favourite colour on a 205 so that's what I'm going for. :)

Cheers pugpete, i'll look into that, £100 seems pretty good for all that! Yeah I'm not buying it, I was just looking into how much it'd cost, and miami being a metallic colour it'll cost a bit over £100 as you say.

Thanks for the help,

Robbie.

My moterfactor sells paint its about £20 for 500ml. But i assume as you order more it would work out cheaper.

So, the painter didnt show up to look at the job! Being that he's the only person around who I know sprays cars I think I'm going to attempt this myself, hopefully with the help of some people on here! :)

I'm going to be ordering paint soon, but I'm really not sure what I need with all the different paints out there. For a home job would it make sense to use a metallic basecoat (2pack? I'm not sure, they say 'solid 2pack', is this metallic?) with 2 pack lacquer on top? What sorts of thinners and hardeners would I need? Or cellulose? I've just looked at a list of different paints offered on a couple of sites and these are the types that came up. :S

As you can probably tell I'm completely clueless having never done anything like this before, but if anyone could steer me in the right direction and possibly tell me exactly what I need to buy? As pugpete says, it would probably end in disaster if I start ordering paint and it turns out to be wrong.

Cheers, :D

Robbie.

Well if you want a nice job first thing you need to buy is an oven lol

Then a compressor then a spray gun

You'll probs need a da sander to take off that peeling laquer then plenty of tape and other bits like that to mask off bit that don't want painting then if you have any money left you could buy some paint

But if you have never sprayed a car befor I would first lean how to paint

I personally wouldn't spray 2pak unless you have a booth and proper masks etc as you will probably die.

Flat paint (not metallic) is easier as getting the metal bits to sit right is hard work and its easy to ruin it. White or light colours are much more forgiving.

I did mine in a lock up garage with a 50l compressor and a proper mask with £100 worth of paint and came up with this.

Yeah consumables add up like sandpaper tape etc but it can be done

It's all in the prep, get that wrong and it will look crap whatever paint you use

I have a sneaky suspicion this was the plan all along.

Alright, my dad's a joiner/carpenter and he has two compressors I could use for it, ones some huge petrol thing and another one just works through a plug, so that's sorted, a gun - there's a garage across the road and the guy who works there is very helpful and offered to let us use his spray gun. I'm an apprentice joiner working with my dad and we've just built a new workshop/garage, split in half by a wall so it's all sealed up and pretty much insulated like a house so it should be pretty warm if we chuck a heater in there. As for the paint, I know it would make sense to do non metallic but I really want a miami blue car so I'm more than willing to take hours/waste paint learning how to put down metallic rather than just going for something else to have the 205 I want :) As for the mask, are there any suggestions which ones are best to buy?

Cheers guys.

I think I'll carry on this topic in my project thread as it's not very suited to the title anymore, thanks for all your help! :)

Just to add you don't want the heater and compressor in where you are painting.

In fact even the lights need to be sealed and ex rated (non explosive) as paint vapour is highly combustible.

So I've still not gotten round to buying paint, I'm on a site called Classic Car Paints, and came up with this

Untitled_zps9dfe3754.png

The one I've selected I'm guessing is waterbased as it doesn't say otherwise? I won't be buying that, and the cellulose only comes in solid colours as far as I can see?

I will be using 2pack lacquer and buying a proper air fed mask etc, but it comes with piles of different activator kits? So I'm really not sure.

If anyone experienced could look up a site and screen shot everything I need it would help a lot, the paint code is MOMY, colour is Miami Blue, year 1994.

Cheers.
