Faild Mot Due To Wishbone Balljoint

Recommended Posts

omri617

Hi

Yesterday I failed Mot . The balljoint is a bit loose and obviously , when you hold the wheel in your hand, and try to move it , there is a 1 - 2 c"m movement.

My question is :

Is there a way to replace the balljoint alone?

Complete wishbones are impossible to get where i live!

Thanks

Are you sure it's the balljoint and not an ovalled hub? The later is common and usually mis-diagnosed as the former.

It should in theory be possible to replace the balljoints, but I don't know anybody offering such a service, and complete wishbones are still comparitively cheap (here in the UK at least) so that's what people do when the balljoints fail.

Unfortunately not, unless you convert it to a rose joint, which involves a fair amount of fabrication. I was planning on going to Israel shortly but I've got an Iran stamp in my passport now,so i'm going to have to wait, otherwise i'd bring one with me hehe. There's a few 205's in Lebanon, you may be able to get one there?

this is what i mean , its the balljoint , no?

j_turnell , It's a good thing if you wait a little bit , weather is not so good down here . April onwards is a good time to come ! let me know when you do that ! :) we can meet.

Lebanon unfortunately is also (like Iran) not so friends with us :(

Yes, that's the balljoint.

However, unless you've actually removed it from the car and confirmed that it is the balljoint at fault, the problem could very well be the hub where the balljoint sits - these wear oval shaped and allow the balljoint pin to move around, making it look initially like the balljoint has play.

Wow

This may explain my shock. the wishbone was replaced last year with only 1800 K'M.

can you give me a link or a photo of the part you talked about?

Yeah i thought that may be the case with Lebanon also. Its worth checking your hub carrier as Anthony rightly mentioned its common for the ball joint hole to oval which gives the impression the ball joint is at fault. If the ball joint is definitely to blame then you'll have to try and source one from overseas i'd imagine. Not sure what its like posting things to Israel??

It should in theory be possible to replace the balljoints,

Funnily enough Al and I were talking about this in the pub the other night, I've never tried but Al has and said he gave it a damn good try on the press and couldn't shift the old one out of the arm. Of course its obvious due to the application that the joint is going to be a very heavy press fit in the arm.

as per the data shown on your imagine.

1.9 and ABS models use the 82mm hub carrier.

base model and 1.6 use the 72mm hub carrier, but NOT the same drive flange.
