Car Cuts Out If I Don't Rev It To Start With!

Recommended Posts

Robbiedundy

Hey, I've recently bought another 205 one of the problems it has is that when starting the car, if you don't rev it for about a minute or so it'll cut out. Sometimes if it cuts out you're not able to start it with the key either. The guy has fitted a push start button because of this (I think!).

Ideally I'd like to remove the push start button and sort the problem, but I've just started working with cars in the last couple months and don't know very much about them.

If anyone could help at all that'd be great! :)

Cheers,

Robbie.

Usual problem , causes are various and sometimes a mix of a few things - SAD (choke) , lose/cracked inlet/breather hoses , TB adjustment , AFM (air flow meter) , ECT temp. sensor , over rich mixture , over lean mixture , ignition components malfunction etc.

Most of them need just good check around , cleaning and replacing worn bits and good tune up afterwards .

The search function will reveal loads of post similar or same as your problem ..

Anyways , how does it perform once warmed up ie while driving ? if you can drive it ...

Thanks!

Yeah, it seems to run fine after about a minute of feathering the throttle on start up, although I'm not experienced at all so there may be something obvious I can't see!

Cheers,

Robbie.

Ok. so it's just the idle issue .

Does this happens just during the first staring (say after standing still over the night till the morning ..) , or is it constantly repeatable on every attempt starting the engine by no means being a cold start in the morning or after a drive around ?

What i mean by this , is it heat related :)

As a quick one , cold start - ask someone to help you out keeping the engine idling , just use your fingers and pinch the SAD hose which connects on the main air intake pipe .. pinch it and hold it like this for a few sec. , if the engine starts to stall/bog down it's good (means that the SAD aka choke works as it should ..) , if you don't spot any difference and engine continues to run smooth , need to check the SAD and it's pipework , and perhaps re-adjust it ..

Erm, I think it may be worse when it's cold, but I stored it in the new garage over night and it still had the same problems.

Anyway, I think I'll try to sort it out at some other point, as I've started stripping it for a respray ;)

Thanks for all your help though Damir, much appreciated!

It's an easy one to sort out :) .. just need to study a little bit around the forum database and you'll learn a lot about our 205's .

Books are also helpful , buy an early Haynes Owners Manual for 205 ... it's good for "how to" DIY repairs .

.. as well as we're here always to help if someone have problems , so ask what bothers you and we'll find the way of fixing it B)
