Can I Use A 16Pin Obd Socket?

Recommended Posts

pugdamo

I want to fit a diagnostic plug in my 309,it has the engine from a 2.0 turbo 605,the original diagnostic plug in the 605 was a 30 pin socket,if i got a 16 pin plug could i just attach the relevant wires and would i be able to read the faults using planet with the 16 pin plug?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work but just wanted someone to confirm :)

Many thanks

Thankyou but want i need to know is because mine had the 30 pin socket can i just get a 16 pin socket and wire that in and just use planet as normal or do i have to wire in the 30 pin socket and get the adapter lead?

Thanks

I only got a 16 pin obd2 connector with my Planet but autodata does show a 30 pin connector for reading fault codes, where the early cars (92-96) show the green two pin plug in the engine bay instead but these were a lower power engine as well (XU10J2TE RGY 139bhp) up to 96 with the 150bhp XU10J2CTE RGX alongside for 94-96 before coming the only 2.0t engine fitted to the 605 but the RGX engine only shows the 30 pin socket you have.

There are only three wires shown on the wiring diagram for the Xantia & 406 2.0t (unfortunately not shown in the 605 autodata though :() which run between pin 13, 43 & 55 on the ecu & pin 3, 7 & 15 on the obd socket.

No data for each pin function though.

Thankyou graham.Iv got a few wiring diagrams but the one i have to hand is one from Vivid,it seems the same as you have said,it shows ECU pin 55 and 13 going back to the diagnostic socket,(doesn't show which pins on the socket though) also ECU pin 13 is spliced into the wire from pin 2 which runs up to the EML,it shows ECU pin 43 going up to the rev counter which although not shown on my diagram i guess must have another splice in it that goes off to the diagnostic socket as you said.

Do you think if i found a 406 turbo with a 16 pin Diag socket i could just trace the wires back and copy those?

Yeah, Autodata shows the same for the 406 turbo wiring diagram, the wire between ecu pin 43 & obd socket pin 3 splits off to the tacho & the MIL comes from the keypad wiring from ecu pin 2 on some models.

If you have a multimeter then surely it wouldn't take long to ring the wires through from the 30 pin diag socket you have & ecu pins 13, 43 & 55, then de-pin them to fit into a 16 pin diag socket, I think you'll need to find a power supply as well to use a hand held reader.

I'll have a look at my handheld reader booklet & see if that shows which pin supplies it with power on a Pug.

I found the S16 had the right picture on the wiring diagram corresponding to the 2 pin diagnostic plug, this is connected to ECU pin 55 to pin 1, pin 2 goes from 13 to pin 2, and linked to pin 2 and the MIL.

to operate the flash codes you earth pin 2 with a switch then watch the flashes on the same pin.

with the 30 pin plug you earth a separate pin

I had a look at my handheld reader book & it does need a separate power feed for the handset so I scanned the page from the booklet in;

There appears to be a few more wires needed than just those above to get it working.

Unfortunately don't have the diag socket, that's still in my 605 which is probably a washing machine or something by now.I will try and find a wiring diagram for the 30 pin socket so i can get the wire numbers then if i can find out the function of each wire i will put them into the 16 pin.

If that fails i will just fit the 2 pin plug as WP said, and just use the flash codes.

Thankyou for your time

Iv been thinking a bit more about this diagnostic socket recently and iv used this diagram,if i get my head around the 30 pin socket wiring then ill use the adapter lead that comes with planet to work out where the wires will go in relation to the 16 pin socket.

ECU pin 2 > 30 pin socket C3 linked to EML

ECU pin 13 > 30 pin socket C2

ECU pin 55 > 30 pin socket C1

When i work out where they go in the 16 pin socket i just add pin 4 as an earth and pin 16 as an ignition live

Hopefully iv got all i need

Its not an ignition switched live afaik but a constant positive from the shunt box although you might need an ignition switched feed as well.

I know when I plug the reader in on my 306 its powers up the screen on my hand held reader with nothing else switched on.

Done a bit more but just need a second opinion,

Pretty sure on this part,

16 pin socket

pin 1 > Ignition +

pin 3 > RPM sense (ECU pin 43)

pin > 4 & 5 Earths

pin 16 > Permanent +

Im stuck with

Pin 7 > K line and pin 15 is the L line but when i check these against the 30 pin socket pins C1 and C2 are both a K line Engine ECU diagnostic so im a little confused

Using the diagram Graham had put up i have worked it out as

Pin 7 > K line ECU pin 55

Pin 15 > L line ECU pin 7

Thanks

To add to that iv just realised not all of the diagrams use ecu pin 7 so i wonder if i could just use the ecu pin 55 to diag socket pin 7?

The problem i have is when i scrapped my 605 i forgot to take out the diag socket so i either need to find a 30 pin socket somewhere (which is easier said than done) and fit that,or try and fit the 16 pin,I have seen those adapter leads and i probably could get hold of one from the dealers i used to work at,but i would then need a 30 pin socket, but im pretty sure iv cracked the wiring for the 16 pin,or very close anyway.

Thankyou

Iv bought myself a little goodie today

2013-04-04200528_zps24219149.jpg

Iv tried it out on my 309 today,i first entered the details for my 605 and it kept saying no communication,i thought this was probably down to the fact that im using a 16 pin socket which the 605 never came with,i tried it as a 406 and hey presto full communication, live data and everything.

This is how i wired the plug

pin 1 > Ignition +

pin 3 > RPM sense (ECU pin 43)

pin > 4 & 5 Earths

Pin > 7 to ECU pin 55

Pin 15 > ECU pin 13

pin 16 > Permanent +

Hope some others can make use of this aswell, thanks for all the help along the way.
