Help! Fuel Pump Not Pumping When I Turn The Key!

Recommended Posts

1905 adam

Hi,

My completely standard 1987 205 1.9 gti was running perfectly. Three days ago it cut out while idling and now won't re-start. I've checked that there's a spark at the plugs. I've disconnected the supply pipe from the fuel rail and found that, when I turn the key, no fuel is delivered. But if I connect the pump directly to the battery then there is fuel at the rail. When I turn the key, I do not hear the pump prime, which I normally would. So I'm assuming I have a relay problem.

My questions:

  • 1. Am I right to assume it's a relay problem? What else might it be?
  • 2. Is the tachymetric relay the same thing as the fuel pump relay?
  • 3. Which one(s) on my car is/are the tachy and fuel pump relays? I've attached photo's of all the relays I could find. (The big black one and the brown one sit in a plastic box next to the near side headlight. The two green ones are mounted next to the washer bottle.)

Thanks a lot!

the black cartier unit is the tachymetric relay, this is the fuel pump relay.

Thanks welshpug!

And do you think this must be the issue? Or what else could it be?

Could be the fuse depending where you are testing the Fuel Pump, Other than that the Relay's are known for failing as a fair amount of current flows thru them

Thanks Miles. Where would I find said fuse? I've checked all the fuses at the front of the fuse board.

If I want to test whether power is going to the relay, can anyone tell me which number connector in the above photo receives the voltage? Thanks!

30 on all relays is the Power in. 87 or 87a are the power out,

on the fuseboard? ie. the blue one in my above photo?

Yes, power to the relay is directly from the shunt box / power distribution block in the engine bay, it is permanently connected & an ignition switch closes the relay to send power to the fuel pump etc.

30 on all relays is the Power in. 87 or 87a are the power out,

So I have 12.26 volts going into connector 30 and only 0.28 volts coming out on 87 and 87a.

Suggests it's dead, yes?

Is that with the ignition on and or cranking?

Pump won't prime until the engine is rotating and the ignition coil is firing.

Pump won't prime until the engine is rotating and the ignition coil is firing.

That's not entirely true - it should also energise with a voltage on the starter solenoid wire, even if the starter doesn't turn the engine over.

The general point you're making is entirely correct through - you won't get voltage on 87 and 87a without the key turned to the crank position even if the relay is working correctly.

The 0.28 voltage was with cranking.

Yes to Anthony's point, I normally hear the pump prime without cranking.

Anyway, just want to say a big T H A N K Y O U ! ! to you all!

I have swapped the relay for a new one and I have my pug back!
