Anybody Interested In Some Beading Pliers? ..guaging Interest...

Recommended Posts

Anton green

I recently made a couple of pairs of tools to put a functional bead on to boost piping and coolant pipes.

They are fashioned from mole grips.

I haven't seen anything like this available anywhere.

Is this something that people might be interested in? Just guaging interest at present..

I searched for ever to find something reasonable on ebay to do the job and didn't find anything at reasonable money -although there were a few beading machines (which were too expensive to justify for about 4 pipes worth of work).

I have no pictures yet, but my question has been answered -there is interest in them! I shall no doubt put a pic or two up of the tool and the beading for folk to see.

If you're handy with grinding tools you can probably make some if you are patient in your work and offer the piece up to the jaws to test the bead fairly frequently. For now imagine a pair of mole grips with the main jaws cut away and a bead crimping jaw ground in to the remaining short area commonly used o strip wire insulation. :)

The top right pair of grips is work in progress for very small diameter coolant pipes. You get the idea of the metal to be removed from the other pairs. The shape of the 'bump' creates the bead shape -you can see that one bead is rounded and another is more triangular (top left) with is reflected in the beading.

Here the rounded bead I could have gotten a little straighter by being patient while crimping, the triangular bead I will probably go around a bit tighter so it isn't so 'notchy'. However the bead will function as is.

Once I have them as I desire I may investigate a coating of some variety over the metal.

ah

so it makes the ridge on a metal pipe to stop a rubber pipe from slipping off

does this only work on copper pipes or alloy as well?

I'd imagine anything which is put inside the jaws to be fair! -The leverage is immense.

I do intend to use these on some alloy pipe in the next week or two (weather dependent) so I will look into getting a good result on the finished tube with them, even though the end result wont ever be seen I will smooth out some tiny imperfections which are currently in the jaws of the grips to get a smoother result upon the piping.

Well.. I'm not going to start producing them I shouldn't think, as they take an age to make with the tooling I have and will take forever to pull back the cost of any tooling I should buy. Having said that there are two pairs here which I could sell at present, and I can give pointers to anybody wishing to copy this idea as there are a couple of pitfalls to avoid which become obvious only after you begin your first bead.

Regards cost I'll have to work out what they stand me at, plus shipping cost, and a Rekorderlig or two for my troubles.

I'll most likely sell them uncoated as they'll function with or without an aesthetic finish and the new keeper can decide if a coating is something which he wishes to have done or not, thus keeping the price down from myself.

I'll take one as long as they can be used on alloy pipe of 2.5" diameter?

PM me.

Hang about guys, I only posted here to see if there was any interest in them as per the thread title!

I do happen to have two pairs currently for sale though, and any further pairs may follow when I have the time to get supplies, go to my workspace and make them -unfortunately regards tool making, I am too busy a man with outside commitments..

Looking back through this thread the first two to express an interest, being fair, would be omega(!) and Pugdamo, so if you would like to have first chance the price I have worked out per pair is £16.36 which includes normal mainland UK shipping.

I can contact any people who would also like a pair when I have further pairs available:)

PM me.

They can be used on 2.5 inch diameter quite easily. The piping in the pictures is as small as 35mm diameter which is consistent with lower radiator coolant hose sizes.

So far I have only used these on copper but I would think alloy should not cause any concerns for them at all:)

i dont mind having a pair but i have no use for them at the moment so if someone really needs these i will stand down.

as i can see these going in my really usefull box, that i might use one day.where they can keep company with my bolt croppers, right angle screwdrivers, seal extracting tools etc

Could you link me to the ebay set please if it is findable again? -If I can pull any ideas from viewing the design they may make it into a future variant of mine.
