Hi there

I wanted to ask this for a long time ! currently with DKZ 1.9 standard , would like more power !

Turbo is not an option (it's illegal in my country)

In case i can get both , which engine would be better ?

Are you planning on rebuilding it?

Most 1.9 Mi16's are getting pretty tired these days, as are looms, AFM's, TB's etc that go along with them. In fine fettle, they are the more enjoyable engine that feels better suited to the 205 GTi, although not without its issues, particularly with regards oil control (surge) and increasingly, availability of parts.

2.0 GTi-6's are comparitively fresh as they're typically 10 year newer, although that's not to say that there aren't tired examples out there. Feel very strong mid range and sound superb (particularly with the resonator removed), but seem to lack that little sparkle the Mi has. Conversion is a little more involved too, but not significantly so.

The often forgotten 2.0 Mi16/S16 engine is another option, a sort of halfway house between the two.

As said, this has been covered many times before, and you need to weigh up the pros and cons of each option for your particular wants/requirements/situation/budget.

Tuned 8 valve.

No messing about with the exhaust, mounts or wireing, lots of cheap tuning parts because everyone's moved to 16v

Less to go wrong... Sound better..

an 8v with similar power to a standard gti6 I hear you say...

Will cost you a significant amount more than a GTi6 conversion...!!

'Cheap' never equals good or reliable.

There are plenty of well rebuilt versions of either (mi-16 and gti-6), and quite a few for sale on here recently, to be honest the choice is a moot point, as long as you get a good mechanically sound unit with decent compression and or plucked from the still warm body of it's donor, by some callous xsara abattoir owner.

What Anthony points out is more important, you want a quality loom, preferably new! fresh ancillaries, good quality hoses or replacement hoses, new clips, possibly replacement sensors, known good air monitoring components.

This will mean, once fitted, it's reliable.

The number of people (apart from paul) that regularly grenade engines is actually quite small, the number of people with half cut botch installs that are forever chasing running issues is very high.

If you want to do it really properly, get brand new sensor loom from someone like sandy, aftermarket ecu, throttle bodies, then and enjoy the hammer.

Read "the joy of bwarp" if you want to get in the mood.

In that case iron blocks are simpler, you don't have to worry about liner protruderance, replacing shaggd liners, liner seats sinking etc etc.

Things that I regret not doing during my rebuild.

  • Decking the block to increase the compression ratio and allow better range of cam options, look up dynamic compression.
  • Pocketing the pistons to make sure i didn't run into any valve clearance issues when running cams.

The second is critical if you want to run more than a stage one cam in a gti-6.

Ps, why are turbos illegal in israel?

iron blocks suffer from far heavier bore wear than an alloy block liner engine.

Although badly worn or scored bores - which are increasingly common - will effectly scrap an iron block unless you overbore and use larger pistons, as obviously you can't just replace them like you can in a wet lined engine.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other basically.

is it possible to go up a ring size?

and have pistons flopping about like a wotsit in a drainpipe? yeah...

fitting bigger rings does not address the problem, fitting bigger pistons does :)

I think the pertinent question here is, are you planning on doing all the work yourself?

Driving wise a gti-6 time. I've driven the same 205 with an mi16 then with a gti6 engine and there is no where where an mi out performes a gti6.

Also IMO the mi being more suited argument is

Bollox as when your giving a 205 gti6 some welly you never feel it doesn't suit the car...

As already said it is personal preference really.

I think that either way it will cost you alot of money to get a nice setup sorted out, most will need a re-build these days.

Also it depends on what your going to use the car for and if you are just planning to run a standard engine.

I have a mi16 and its a great little engine, however it has cost me a fortune. Main reason i stuck with the mi16 is to stay old school really.

However for a daily drive and if you just want to keep it standard go for a nice rebuilt gti6. Also the gti6 doesnt have the same issues with oil surging etc.

I agree with you after driving both there is not even a comparsion Gti6 is by far the better option

I'm biased towards 6 engines. I driven a few MI's and in my opinion didn't like it, I like power low down the rev range like a diesel and the 6 engine has this.

Will be interesting to see what the petert cams do :)

The only reason my earlier engines blew up is because I rushed things and didn't do things properly. Doing timing belts in the dark and not doing up bottom pulleys for example (never go chasing tvr's with a loose pulley!)
