106 Electric Steering Pump Oe Loom

I've recently sourced a 106 electric power steering pump to use with my VTS steering rack. Today I received an original loom with relay to save me making one up as if I'm honest I'm shy around electrics.

Now I've a few questions about how to connect it up.

The red power cable - this will need an inline fuse. I'm thinking something like this:

 

In-Line-Fuse-Holder-for-ATS-Fuse-PVC-FA8

 

The relay fitted is a 30A. So do I match the fuse to this or go a bit larger with the ampage? The pump has it's earth, the relay has it's earth. The thin earth and thin white wire that go from the relay to the green socket - can I put that to an ignition source? I would say they are too thin personally but I suppose it's only to give the relay a signal to operate? My intention is to have it on with the engine running.

 

I don't need it on with first click ignition only to move it easier or anything. Any pointers of where to get the ignition feed from would be appreciated. So if I run the thick power cable to the shunt box, will I need an inline fuse in the cable or can I put a fuse in the shunt box itslef like the fan has?

 

As I've proved above I've minimal knowledge on this so I welcome all suggestions. Hopefully this topic can become useful to others wanting to do similar as I've noticed a few people of late contemplating a 106/Saxo electric pump.

I have the same loom for the one I am fitting to mine. As you may have looked and found there is bugger all info on it (i.e wiring diagrams). However from what I have (hopefully) worked out, on the grey plug one wire is connected to a 12v ign and the other the small alternator wire. This way the green relay holder gets the 12v feed and the trigger to switch it on from the alt - meaning it will only power when the engine is running (like a normal pas system) and not just when the ign is switched on.

 

As you have drawn, you could do away with the green relay holder and connect the white to 12v ign feed or others wire it in on a switch so they can power it with the engine off for pushing it about etc.

 

Feel free to correct me before I wire mine in!

Well that's confused me more as I though the only relay required was the one in the large grey holder. So the green plug holds one also?

 

Hopefully the picture above will help someone to make it idiot proof :lol:

Yes the green holder is for a relay. From what I can figure out that is what makes the pump run only when the engine is running. Cut that part out and it will be running as soon as you put power to it.

 

Do as you have drawn above and it will work fine :)

Also, with the wires you have marked "to ignition", you can get rid of the thin green one altogether since that just earths the green relay you are removing. Just link the thin white wire to an ignition live and the pump will run with ignition on.

This appears to relate to what I thought. I was intending on cutting the wires where I drew the dots on the 'ignition' wires and doing away with the green socket and the grey plug above it so I would only be using 1 relay next to the pump. Noted that it requires changing for a 45A. To summarize - I can run the thin white wire to an ignition live and the only other connections will be the 2 arths to the left and the thick red live wire.

 

I will do a fancy MS Paint mock up later to ensure I am on the same hymn sheet :lol:

I would seriously recommend stripping the motor side of the pump before you do anything else and check it over. I managed to make a good one out of two after the first two I fitted lasted about 30min each before crapping out.

I like the look of those fuse holders so will buy one of those :)

 

That's my intention Tom. I will pull it apart and see what it looks like inside. I will post pictures of my findings in the hope of reassurance or suggestions to scrap it :lol:

 

I'm trying to tidy up some loose ends and get as much prepared as I can now while the weather is poor ready to be able to start fitting it all when the weather improves.
