How Is The Rad Temp Fan Switch Sensor Mounted?

the fan temp sensor switch (or whatever theyre called) for my radiator doesnt have a mount so is just sat on top of the radiator, so im pretty sure its not getting an acurate reading. Does anyone have a photo of the correct way to mount it so I can sort it out? I have tried to find a picture that shows it clearly but to no avail

Are you sure that's not the fan resistor you're looking at, which does sit on top of the rad? 3" ish long silver tube?

 

The fan switch is the smallish three pin thing with an M22 thread that screws into the radiator, probably around 3" underneath the top radiator hose on your car. Earlier cars had them on the drivers side of the radiator near the bottom.

aha maybe thats it! either way its not attached to anything, I'm sure its supposed to have a little metal mount or something?

So what does the resistor do then? is it still affected by temperature?

Had the same problem, so just used cable ties! Pretty silly that there doesn't appear to be a bracket anywhere?

cable ties is not an advisable method of securing as they do get pretty hot, hence being mounted to something that can take it, they originally have a metal clip.

I've got a little metal bit from a 306 seat (the bit that holds the seatbelt pretensioner) which looks like it could be modded to fit. is it supposed to be touching the radiator?

If your car has a replacement radiator, which I expect 99.9% of 205's will have by now you'll have lost the proper metal sprung clip that was fitted from the factory unless whoever replaced it transferred it over to the new one.

Mine was originally mounted on the front panel, behind the bumper below the headlight using said metal clip - That is until it rusted away. I.e, well away from the radiator itself. (Of course I could be muddling this with the dip-dim resistor?)

You are - the dim-dip is mounted below the passenger headlight, the radiator fan resistor to the top of the rad.

It's a resistor, and is there purely to enable the fan to run slowly on the low speed setting.

 

Basically, on the slow speed setting, current flows through the resistor, meaning the fan runs slowly. On the high speed setting, current runs to the fan directly, meaning that it run quickly (but with increased noise)

I was about to say exactly that.. I thought I had a photo of mine to be able to show the location but it appears I don't unfortunately.

Lets apply the Duct tape and WD40 rule to this. If it is meant to move and it wont, use WD40 - if it moves and it is not meant to, use Duct Tape.
