Increased Power - From The Heater Fan!

Recommended Posts

PeterGriffin

Hey up all,

As we all know the heater fan in the 205's is far from the in-car tornados of the modern lot.

Has anyone figured out a way of making the heater blower more powerful? Motor with more coils, slight increase in voltage, maybe even a motor from a different car?

I live in what feels like the north pole currently and it's struggling to keep the screen clear, even when warmed up...! Plus I'm a bit of a blouse when it comes to the cold.... not normal for a scotsman, I know...

make sure it works, and the heater matrix is not partially blocked, and you'll be fine.

Never had a problem with mine, actually I find it's quite an efficient little unit.

i ofton wondered if a 406 set up would fit as in my 406 it was red hot and iam sure the moter looks about the same.

but what really makes the diffrence is it the heatermatrix, the thermostat or the moter?

Someone once spent a lot of time messing around with a 406 motor to make it fit, though I don't know how successful it was. Tom Fenton went and bought a new 205 one and raved about it being the best £60 he had ever spent!

Heated windscreen is what you really want. A fresh heater matrix may assist too a they can sludge up. Perhaps a coolant flush would be the easiest start followed by a higher temp thermostat to get the car running a little hotter.

Oh yeah, I fitted a new motor. Probably why it works so well.

I was chatting with Cheesegrater just the other day regarding the heated screens. Am looking into sorting a group buy!

i actually think the heaters are better than modern day cars....

In some instances it actually wants to melt my face.

Ha! Have you ever sat behind the heaters in a new sprinter? its like a industrial fan blowing through a furnace at your face, insane!

I put a new matrix in the Rally, the motor was healthy and I was never left wanting from it. Although the 6' did warm up pretty sharpish!

Sorry to sort of hi-jack this thread but I'm having problems with my one too :(

When I switch my ignition on the fan stays on full blast and I'm not able to adjust the speed etc, also it makes sooo much noise, I cleaned it today which made it a little better but I really need to get it fixed, if anyone could help I'd be very happy :D

Living in Scotland also, and having it disconnected all the time, it's far too cold!

Mine seems very hot once warmed up, don't have to run it for long at all tbh. Most of the time I just let the exhaust heat the car up with no carpet ^_^

I agree with the op, my gtx warms up really well, I cant fault it but when dealing with modern cars all day the motor does seem a little bit weak it blows ok but would like it to be better

I somehow got myself a 206 fan blower motor from scrapy and my friend modified it for me. Now it blows much stronger than the last time I have a new 205 blower motor.

You can always trust Engine Killer to have come up with a way of doing things that no one else has attempted yet!

they look the same  I'd swap the plastic casing over if they are that close.

Thank you but I am not the one who had such idea, my friend had :P and I am always the one who failed when trying new ideas

did thought about it but found out swopping the casing is harder than doing such simple mod.

Its the trying new ideas that matters, success is always preceded by many failures in my experience.

Also, in the pics, one is the modified 206 motor, is the other a standard 206 one for comparison? Because neither looks like the 205 one i know - yes i am probably being stupid here but i had to ask since i thought maybe yours was an air con car (being HK spec) and had a different heater box/motor setup.

Sam you are right, I only have 206 motors in the picture. Since number of 205 in Hong Kong is "easy countable" so finding one for comparison seems very difficult. I have one picture from ebay for your reference.

iirc the fan blower motor is the same for both a/c and non-a/c spec (correct me if i am wrong)

afaik you have to modify the socket as well.

so are we saying that a 206 motor ( without fan assembly and mounting block) is interchangeable with a 205

haven't got a clue but I think not

otherwise my friend would take that route to give a more "original look".

Worth noting that in my experience, if you're having trouble keeping the car de-misted, there is likely another underlying issue - likely either trapped moisture (probably in the carpet or boot underlay) or a failing heater matrix, and looking to upgrade the fan or heater is treating the symptom, not the cause.

i still think it's probably worth a trip to the scrappy.

one very important point if you are switching to a higher power blower, give a good inspection on wires, sockets, relays even the sockets as they are already 20+ years old.
