What To Look For When Buying A 205

Recommended Posts

Blueie

I’m a newbie on here and I’m after getting back up to speed with 205's.

I use to do a lot of road rally's and autotests with my friend which we were driving 205's. Both of us have been out of the picture for a while now and interested to getting back into the 205 scene!

So by getting back into 205’s I fancy buying either a standard tidy 205 or a little project to tidy up or to be turned into a rally car.

I do have a general knowledge of the 205 and I know the 205 is coming of a good age now but what would be good pointers I need to look out for when buying?

For example:

Modifications made to the 205 I should avoid?

Engine problems?

Body?

Etc.?

Thanks in advance

In terms of modifications you'll need to cast a good eye over the quality of the work.

There are a myriad of modifications that could of taken place so it is very difficult to list them all.

Mi16 on 8v clockwork management. (dizzy adaptor)

I understand the work carried out must be quality but probably one of the top performance mod to the engine would be the change of the cam.

Has anyone had a bad experience with a certain brand? One better than the other? To lumpy?

The biggest headaches I've had with mine mate is hidden rust, problem areas tend to be the rear bumper mounts, inner wings and the bottom of the rear quarter, but I would spent plenty of time with a torch having a look underneath. If you can find one with a good solid body then most mechanical parts tend to be plentiful and easy to find in my experience.

Also beam rebuilts can be expensive, there is a wealth of information on here so my advise would be to do as much research as you can before making a purchase, wish I had!

The smart choice in my opinion would be either a nice original example with no mods, or a nicely done Mi16 conversion.

That’s my thoughts. So far I’m not convinced with the MI16 in the 205 I’ve seen many 1.9’s pulling far better.

So I’m looking towards a tidy 1.9 with a possible cam

Well you've not had a good experience then!

A cam in a 1.9 won't do much.

Kent, piper, catcams are all ok, there are others.

You'll need to adjust fuelling/ignition to make the most of the cam.

Cams can be lumpy but that's the trade off, duration and lift is going to have an effect at one end of the rev range.

I think you should have a search of these forums, perhaps in the project area to get some ideas.

Maybe I haven’t but I’m here to learn.

Cam with a combination of an exhaust, manifold and filter wouldn’t be far off from a standard MI16 would it? Plus the front would be lighter.

Believe me, you need to go a long way to get a 1.9 8v to anywhere near the performance of a 16v.

Standard exhausts are very good, so there's not much gain to be had there, likewise with a filter realistically.

Dependant on the cam, you won't get much out of one without increasing the compression, and then you'll need to be looking at changing the induction to carbs/throttle bodies.

An mi16 in even half decent order is miles better than even a slightly modified 1.9 8v.

I’m just going by my experience, might not be much but that’s all I’m going by.

No need to be negative about things and adding things when id allready replied I’m new here and trying to learn more and get to know people and expand my knowledge so please no need try an make out im dumb.

I understand your point, sorry its going a bit off topic now as mentioned i was going down more the standard route and keeping the 205 engine and modify that.

That's fair enough, all i meant was; to get anywhere near the bang for buck you'll get from a 16v conversion, which is what was initially mentioned, you'll need to have deep pockets and be prepared for some work! Don't be naive as to think that simple bolt-on mods carry any real gains.

 I don't see that anyone's been negative or accused you of being dumb tbh. As said that it's all stuff that's been covered before, unsurprisingly, so you'll be able to find concise answers to most of these questions should you try a search.

I wasn't trying to come over having a go, but I’m not after changing the engine to a 16v i want to keep the 8v in and get some extra gains nothing huge. 16v was suggested and the comparison i had between an 8v and 16v was the 8v pulled better and suited what we used it for i.e. road rallies. After converting to 16v i wasn’t happy and went back to the 8v.

I understand this topic might have been answered but i joined to gain knowledge and get to know people not search.
