Wrong Bolts For Wishbones?

Recommended Posts

Richie-Van-GTi

I'm polybushing a gti at the moment on the front wishbones as it seems to destroy them very quickly. However the bolts in there are not shouldered. They are the correct width / length. Could the fact they are not shouldered be contributing to the premature failure as I'm certain from memory the OE bolts are shouldered.

As you say they should be shouldered but I very much doubt un-shouldered bolts will have any effect on bush longevity, just s*it bushes I would imagine. Are they oe bushes or aftermarket?

Are you remembering to tighten the bolts up with the weight on the wheels? Tightening them with the wheels in the air is a good way to destroy them.

On every wishbone kit I've bought from pug recently has had a non shouldered bolt on the front

comes with correct bolts

Actually it does not, the smaller M10 supplied is a fully threaded set screw when it should be a bolt with a shank.

Will it make much of a difference then Tom fully threaded rather than shanked?

Common sense would say not, but my experience is that 205's are VERY sensitive indeed to any play in wishbone bushes/pins and so it is better to use the correct shanked bolt.

Yes they are always tightened with the weight on the wheels. The wishbones were OE ones complete with bushes and have done very little mileage. Sub 3k. But have been subjected to a few torturous hours on rollers after a few mapping sessions and 2 engine changes.
