Classic Car Insurance Prices Moan

Recommended Posts

Phil H

After receiving my latest renewal from Footman James, I think running a 205 as a second fun car is over. The price quoted is not far off the premium I pay on my DS3, which at over £10,000 difference in car value is hard to swallow.

I rang other companies and again, no reasonable price, nowhere near the mid £100 price I had last year. Had a look at Peter Best, but they want 26 year old cars before considering classic policies.

Another scary thing is how much information they know about you already, like Adrian Flux knew my SP30 in 2009, my email address and other bits of personal info, yet I've never had any dealings with them before, so guess they must be a linked company to someone else I have contacted in the past and considering I do less than 3k a year, prices just seem crazy. I had to laugh when I was told I had free European Cover with my 3000 miles limit, soon eat up them miles !!!

I had a look at Greenlight, but seems like even there policies start at over £212 according to their thread on here. What happened to men getting cheaper insurance now aswell?

Any suggestions before I throw in the towel?

The value of the car is kind of insignificant if you were to run down a queue of people waiting at the bus stop...

Anyway, how cheap are you expecting insurance to be if you're implying that £212 Greenlight start at is too much?

Very surprised that Peter Best have told you that... My 205 is '90 and quite modified and they are my insurers...

Mind, having said that, they wouldn't insure my friend with a 406sri conversion in his ad his is 2 years older than mine

I was paying £165 fully comp last year. I have read on here that people have been paying £130 even. My area is quiet, I own my home, average job, getting some grey hairs etc, so not sure where the increase is derived from...

This is how they generate your quote:

I'm paying ~£250 for a 1500 mile policy with it parked in a locked garage, 14 years no claims with a completely clean licence. Insurance is just a massive con.

Was the change really ever going to force insurers to lower premiums for men and lose out on revenue or was it going to be that women were now equal to pay what a man would?

Sorry to hear you are struggling to justify the expense. Have a good shop around and see if a more realistic price (in your opinion) is available or if you find that's 'the going rate' then you will as you say have to seriously consider whether running a second car is viable.

Lets say for example that the insurance was quoted at £240...

For the price of half a tank of fuel a month you're considering not running the car????

Seriously? An extra £3-£4 per week is peanuts to pay. It's only the price of a pint.

I have my car insured with Heritige and its circa 180 a year iirc.

Hagerty were a similiar price when I last renewed.

Thats limited mileage (1500), agreed value and salvage retention. Also my car is 2 insurance groups higher than a 'normal' 1.9 GTI.

Do some shopping around. I found Flux to be expensive and useless for both the 205 and the beemer.

Well I spent some time on the phone and here are the results...fully comp unless stated.

Footman James £255

Adrian Flux £229

Peter Best £1265 (can't do classic car, have to start as a new driver with zero no claims).

Heritage £293

Greenlight £262 TPF&T

I can't fault greenlight so far, much cheaper than anything else I found and excellent customer service (which is impressive in the insurance industry)

try HIC, get a forum discount and very helpfull, Ive always been with footman james and rang HIC as they were closed on saturdays. Told them my quote she said it was very good, managed to beat by £20 and add loads of extras. £208 for gti6 kept on drive, most extra mods can be added for free. breakdown cover inc, home start, relay etc, legal cover, euro cover, even driving other cars.

For a weekend car i would consider not using it in the winter months to pay the extra insurance and let the 205 out for the summer just to keep it.

Eh........I pay £165 per year through Footman James and that was over £250 cheaper than last year, which in turn was £95 cheaper than the year before.

Does anyone remember paying £300 for your first mini 1000 and then having to fork out £700 for third party only cover when you were 17?

Seriously, which part of £212 per year is not cheap?

Car insurance has always been expensive, the most annoying thing is that when some pratt drives into you, you are more tempted to try and sort it yourself rather than claim on the insurance policy you are forced to purchase.

I can remember my first big bill of £1180 TPFT as a 20 yr old lad with a 405Mi16.

However I do feel sorry for the young lad at our place, over 3 grand! Yes £3000 for his Corsa 1.2 insurance.

Maybe the last few years of paying such a low price has got me used to sub £100 something. I accept I have a fault accident, but it didn't affect things much last year, so maybe insurers are looking at ways to extricate more revenue.

I want to clear up that we are talking that this is to run the 205 as a second car on a limited mileage policy with no commuting and being shackled down between 22:00 - 06:00hrs, as opposed to a "normal" policy. Perhaps there have been a lot of claims in the area or the no win no fee brigade are out in force, and can't recall anyone being mown down at any bus stops around here.

Pay per mileage tax, or tax exemption for 25yr old classics (if the rule was still available) would be nice too, but that's another story. And we're a far way off not needing an MOT on classics, as owned by people who look after them so well.

Well I've still got a few weeks of cover, so will be on the phone a bit more yet.

So, you've got a fault claim against you, an SP30 conviction, and depending on which part of Northampton you're in, potentially not a very attractive postcode from an insurance point of view either (NN1 to NN5 cover most of Northampton and they're D rated), all in a year when the insurance industry in general has been hit hard thanks to the widespread flooding, and you're bitterly whinging that you're not getting sub-£200 quotes?

Lets put that £200 into context - you're probably losing that per month in depreciation on your 62 plate Citroen DS3 at the moment.

Probably right with the depreciation point. Northampton got off quite lightly with the floods, unlike in 1998 when those in the low lying parts were in three feet of water. The only area significantly affected this year was Billing Aquadrome, which as it's name suggests got rather wet as it lies on the lower reaches of the River Nene and would any losses be loaded on to Home Insurance policies...mine went down this year? I thought that flood damage expenditure was covered with an agreement of funding by Central Government.

Anyway, just called Directline who've cover it for 90 days as an additional car for £41 on the DS3 policy. We have a friend with a houseboat and I bet their boat insurance has gone up, as they've had to be evacuated a few times this year!

Why would an houseboat need evacuating? shouldn't it float?
