What Springs For Gaz Coilovers

Recommended Posts

Need some advice

I've decided to go for some gaz coilovers on my 2.0L 8v turbo project.

Think I've read through 90% of the posts about these but still not clear what poundage of springs to order

.

I am running standard 309 beam and will be 95% road use and will be lowering around 25mm.

will 200 lbs springs be ok with that engine/beam set up? if so do I have to worry about spring length?

Like to get things clear before I phone and order to avoid any mistakes.

Thanks.

200lb springs shouldn't be too far away. I would go for 9" free length. However don't get too hung up on it, as the whole beauty of coilovers is that the springs are cheap and readily available should you decide you wish to alter them.

Really is a case of see what people with a similar set up have gone for to gauge feedback, try that and then change if it's not for you rather than go for what is 'the norm' and live with it because it's apparently 'right'.

You may find you wished you'd gone for 185's or you may think 250's would be ideal - all trial and error based on personal perception.

The thing you notice on a lot of forums is people do go for what is popular whether they need it or not - and often don't actaully like it but think it's fine because that's what everyone else is happy with.

Basically go with your gut of 200 and be prepared to change either way if you aren't happy with it.

Yeah i know there are a lot factors to take into account with stuff like this, Everyone's driving style, car set up, tyres are different then you have comfort vs handling.

Was really just looking for a starting point and like Tom says the springs are well priced to chop and change if the car doesn't drive the way I'd like.

I've always went for koni in the past, springs end up around £80 a pair so always stuck with what was "the norm" when ordering

.

200-225lb should be a good starting point

180lb works well with a lighter alloy block engine and a 309 beam in my experience, riding well and feeling nicely balanced, so a slightly higher spring rate for the heavier engine should work.

gaz are very accomodating and helpfull but don't feel like you have to listen to there advice. They advised i order 350lb springs(standard 309 beam), they were way too stiff but they happily exchanged them for 225lb springs which are a bit more like it.

I'd agree on the make you're own guesstimate rather than use the same as others. mine are a lot harder than some peoples, and last time I posted what poundage they are everybody was very keen to tell me that they'd be much too harsh for road driving. but I disagree, it feels just right for me

The main thing if you want the car to handle is keeping a match with the rates at the rear of the car. I run 275lb springs on my road 205 with 23mm rear bars (309 width)
