Over the years I've not heard a single good word in favour of them. I've heard plenty of horror stories.

Often you'll hear some bad s*it about some companies but you can balance that out with the good reviews. Doesn't seem to apply here though!

Yes, I live in Edinburgh. Frankly I couldn't care if this person was my next door neighbour. I'm only repeating what could be found with a bit of time spent Googling, and any member on here asking about whether they should consider this company for engine work deserves to know what bad experiences some of our members have had.

Is HFH still the same company? The reason I ask that is it looks like a fairly new website, and I don't remember them being Lothians based (it would have stuck in my mind).

I was originally looking to hit the 250bhp-ish mark, something to frighten the 100k supercars, but keep the car and shell original. Quickly realised that it would be a best to put in a roll cage with power like that and track days just make this more necessary.

Sticking NA, you are going to have to spend serious money to get near to 250bhp. The least stressful way seems to be increased capacity, slightly wilder cams and ITBs. But that means you are going to have to replace most of your Mi (you'd need to go iron bottom end), and there won't be much you'd really retain except the head and maybe the exhaust manifold. DrSarty's project threads are worth looking up as he got ~230-240bhp and very good torque on a 2.2 16v. I think his build cost was about £4k but he did a lot of the work himself and he's very good at finding bargains, using a lot of 2nd hand of scrapyard parts etc.

If you look up Allenallen on here, I think it's him that has a 1.9 Mi with an Eaton blower, which he did himself. Quite a rare conversion. And I think he's seeing ~250bhp.

We've got a handful of 1.9 MIs with turbos on here too. One guy in Aus with about 350bhp. One of the biggest costs with that route is the exhaust manifold. DP do a good one but they are very expensive. IIRC the manifolds are affectionately known as a "welders nightmare" hence they aren't cheap.

Then you've got the rotary supercharger conversions that are getting very popular on the GTI6 engines (Lynx Power Engineering). I'm sure you could modify their kit to mount to an alloy block Mi16. Again 250bhp-ish on low boost.

Edit: DrSarty's 2.2.

Yes, I'm in Edinburgh, but my 205 hasn't seen the road since Autumn 2010. I rarely see any 205s out and about the East Lothian region. There was a Miami blue that I used to see every day but this went down south (think it's Scott Barton on here that has it). They're probably all hiding away in garages, mid-project, like mine.

If you want an engine build done right where you are then you have to remove engine and send it to a proper company.

Stick engine on a pallet for £60 ish (along with a large cheque)

The engine in my 306 was done like this. Was sent down to Longman and was back a few weeks later.

As for HFH...do your homework and take it somewhere else :)

ok i really dont get involved with this kind of thing but;

i have a hi flow built engine and cannot fault any of what has been done at all,i have done a fair bit of reading through reviews ect and it seems a really mixed bag?

can i ask where people are reading or the bad reviews are?

via pm ideally as not to clutter up the boards with it.

oh and im not trying to dispute or agree with anything i just want to form my own opinion

HFH stuff might look good, but it takes more than that to make numbers and these never do.

I would avoid. If you're serious, look around at proper race engine builders with proven results in competition, none of these faux-'tuners'.

Thanks folks, looks like I've got a lot of chin-scratching to do... might be asking for a replacement low mileage chin soon... :)
