Pistonheads Thread On 205 Gti Prices On The Up....

my view is that there is definitely a trend to 205 gti values going up and as numbers on the road dwindle. ( though a healthy amount seem to be sorn'ed )

like any car they will only ever be worth what a person is willing to pay and that will always depend on condition ( originality , history and milage and history/provenance all considerations )

as always a non modified low milage car in good unrestored condition will be sought after and make a strong value but as the values of the best cars go up so in turn will the type generally which can only be a good thing for those who have restored their cars to as near as factory standard as possible as it ensures that the considerable time , effort and money involved wont have been a total financial loss as it might indeed be possible to recoup some (if not all ) of what will have been spent if the car ever came to market unlike modified examples which are sadly probably worth more split in to parts and those owners stand little chance of recouping their outlay in my opinion as performance aftermarket parts are so expensive and nearly never reach anything like their purchase price if sold on.

could this lead to modified examples being restored to standard spec? who knows?

in addition to the cars themselves increasing in value the spare oem parts market has also seen a rise in prices as more and more is listed by peugeot as not available or not in production so those who have wisely accumulated a healthy amount of spares are also seeing a value increase in their stocks value.

also due to the above some i can see an increase in the reproduction of replacement parts that are near impossible to find as out of production.

only time will tell how fast and how high values of 205 gti's will climb but one thing is for sure the days of finding a sound usable ( presentable with mot and drivable ) example for under a grand is long gone and not coming back. :)

...not to rain on the parade of prices going up or anything, I'm all for it, but sometimes these "205 GTi as an investment" threads make me chuckle a little. Not at anyone in a sardonic way, but more, the sort of overall feeling that you can buy a 205 GTi as an investment or as a sensible appreciating asset.

To be honest, I've never been outside in the pouring rain putting a 200 euro gearbox into a savings account, if you know what I mean :) It's like saying cocaine is going up in value.

It'll be a nice gift to offset the simply insane running costs of these things to have it neatly appreciating as time goes on, but, I'm never going to sell mine til death rips it from my oily grasp so I'll never see any of it back :)

One thing I am looking forward to seeing the end of is relatively repairable examples being broken for spares. There's one breakers here in Ireland and he must go through ten a year.

Funny thing is... he even manages to sell the shells, figure that one out? :D

I'm bored with these debates now, so can't be arsed to get involved.

But this made me laugh

Anyone who pays over 5k for one needs their head examining. You could do a complete nut and bolt resto for 5k easily.

It made me laugh because it was posted by Teknopug, who is one of our old ex-members. He sold his 1.9 TT several years ago. Me thinks he's slightly lost touch with the true cost of restoring a 205 these days ^_^

There are 3 cars that I could have bought for 8K each 10 years ago that are now selling for over 25k (each).

It's just having that foresight.....................

doh.....kicking myself.

They deserve their place in motoring history just as much as the RS et al. Prices will reflect this. I'd pay quite a lot for a garage queen tbh. Just to clean and look at. half because they are such an amazing design and the other for the nostalgia..I owned em when I was younger and have a lot of found memories. In my opinion there are faster cars but few as involving at lowish speeds.

A true classic!

Well, its no different to any other 'classic' car that was desirable when new is it really. You only have to look at values of all manner of cars - Escorts, E30 M3's, E-types, Capris, Quattros, the list goes on. Many follow the same pattern - very desirable and popular when new, followed by depriciation and decline, then they go through that period of atrition where no one really wants them any more, they're virtually worthless and get rapidly scrapped.

I've been on the Peugeot stand at the NEC Classic motor show for the last few years and I tell you what - if I had a pound for everyone that looked at the 205 GTI on display there and fondly said 'I had one of them' or 'my best mate had one of them' or 'I always wanted one of them' then I'd be pretty rich by now. Of course, some of those people want to relive a bit of their youth and decide to go and get themselves one, so demand starts to outstrip supply and prices begin to rise.

Hadn't clicked on to the thread for a day and just seen the recent posts. Baz's post made me smile :)

Also seems to have turned into a comparison thread with a Porsche now.
