Locking Wheel Nut Key

Recommended Posts

Today I broke one of the lugs off my locking wheel nut key. It still undo's the locking wheel nuts but I notice that another lug has a stress fracture and is in danger of breaking off too. Before I get left with a wheel stuck on my car is there anywhere that does replacement locking nut keys? If not I guess I'll be looking at a new set of locking wheel nuts.post-8703-0-40625200-1357836964_thumb.jpg

Unless you've still got the original code card that would have come with them when bought new, you're probably on a hiding to nothing.

Personally, I'd just remove the remaining locking wheel bolts whilst you can, throw them in the bin, and just buy a new set (or run normal bolts)

I suspect the cost of a new key isn't far off the cost of a complete new set of bolts anyway, and likely rather more than a used set.

if theyre a good brand they usually have a serial number on them and you can go to the manufacturer and order one.

I had a set made out of cheese grade metal and they were useless. Drilled them out after they smoothed the hex edges

As locking nuts are easy to remove I'd just run std bolts, if someone wants your wheels they will have them

I know the company that made those have long gone from memory

I hate that type and on past cars I've had with them I've removed them straight away as each time I've ever removed a wheel with one fitted I cringe worrying the pins will snap off

The other splined types aren't much better either IMO.

I recently remove a set of these from my car and returned to standard bolts as the metal on both the key and the bolts was starting to lose it's shape (round-off) making it increasingly difficult to remove the bolts. I'm not sure if I will bother replacing them as my alloys are hardly in good condition and 205 alloys are ten-a-penny on fleabay so may not be worth stealing; also, if they worked, wouldn't insurance companies tell you to fit them?

I used to run locking wheel nuts until one day i lost the key and it took me all of a 2 minute trip to halfords to get a reverse spiral socket and get them off. After that they seemed kind of pointless to me.

Thanks for the advice guys. I decided to go for a new set from the Bay for £15 - just to give the scrotes something to think about before pinching my new rubber. On removing the old bolts another pin snapped off leaving only 2 on the key, it was a nervous last 2 bolts I tell ya!!
