What Springs? 205 Fast Road Track Car.

Recommended Posts

Guest Butler

I have ordered bilstein inserts for the front and Leda adjustables for the back, all tarmac spec. £200 the lot.

Need some springs. Adi recommended 200-250lb springs.

Does any know the spring rates of different springs? Which ones to get and where from?

I will be looking to do the rear torsion bars and ARB at a later date depending on how she handles.

Cheers,

I have searched around, but most topics are for dampers only.

Roll cage is the post too..... :)

Marc,

I've spent quite a lot of time over the weekend working out figures on the suspension frequencies and spring rates based on weight etc.

There are a couple of people at the moment that are requesting spring rates, both front and rear......to sort their set ups.

I've mentioned before.......it's not just the front spring rate that needs choosing. Its the front and rear........and both go together.......to form part of the balance.

Now based on 21mm torsion bars at the rear.......and the overall weight of the car being about 850kgs......the front spring rate really doesn't want to be any higher than about 200-210lb/in......220lb at a max.

If you are willing to go for a higher rate torsion bar.....say 23mm......then you can up the front spring rate to the 275lb/in mark.

I've heard of people using a higher poundage spring at the front.......but if the front and rear aren't kept in balance.........then the handling will be hurt and it can start causing problems like pitching.

I read a case where Leda chose 325lb front springs on a 205. When the car went on the track.....it just understeered everywhere.

:D:lol::D:D:D Still leaves the original question doesn't it. :)

Unless someone like Skip Brown or similar make springs specifically for different set ups.....i.e not just for normal road use.......then you may struggle to get the right spring in 6" diameter form.

The Eibach road spring is rated about the 180lb-200lbs mark.

In 2.5" diameter this will be simple.......loads of people make them.

Sounds like I will just have to buy some and then adjust the rear TB and ARB if it understeers.

Cheers anyway.

Glad to see that no ones gone down the LEDA Route of very heavy poundage springs, I must agree with ADI that around 200lbs should be fine.

I think i got 200lb, someone said that is what AVO supply with their coilover kits...

Its not too bad on the road, bit bumpy but that doesn't really matter, unless you are old with arthritus :)

Got an OMP cage.

Will coil over springs fit normal struts? I didn't think they would.

My rallye's dampers are konis on the hardest setting. I am used to a firm ride. ooo err. :)

My 2.25 id springs are 225lb from Skip Brown and are just fine for competition or track days. Probably too hard for everyday use though, 180-200 sounds more like it.

Do Skip Brown provide lower poundage springs?

If I asked them for -40mm and 200LB springs would they help?

I guess I could ask them for rear TB's and a rear ARB while I am at it.

If that is what you require.....have a look at the thread entitled "Streetline kit" in this section..........and there is different pictures and comments of trim height of the Eibach springs.

Those springs will be about 180lbs in extended state......and about 200lbs in compressed form.

I believe the final spring chosen was the Sportline spring for the 106.

Phase 1 and 2 kit might be what you need then, I have this totally great on the road and track (with road tyres), wet or dry.

Don't think so because they've got to set up the rear negative Camber, but might be worth asking if you know someone who is competant enough to setup the rear camber( and will spend the time without charging you a fortune) :)

Looking at buying a complete uprated beam for £300. I will fit that and sell mine.

£500 for the TB and ARB's is a lot for the gain. The money might be better spent on a LSD.

I have a budget of 3K. I have spent £1300 so far for the car, cage and 4 dampers.

I found the rear upgrade made as much difference as the LSD (which I fitted first), but it did cost more...
