Seats are comfortable, it will be quiet and refined and therefore she'll be in a good mood when she gets home.

I think in the end of the day it is better to buy what she wants (1-series diesel) for this very reason! :)

Are there any common issues with 2006 engines (pre-DPF) e.g. the swirl flaps failing or were those fitted to earlier engines?

The thing with turbo diesels is that they are often driven by people who don't have an understanding about cars will most probably not warm up/cool down properly so a blown turbo might be something to expect in higher mileage (>80k) engines?

Edit: a quick google shows that the swirl-flap issue is between 2001-2004 and they changed the design afterwards. The more I read about the problems with BMW diesel engines (e.g. timing chain failures) though the more I am put off by them :(

DPF isn't a problem if you give it a good run regularly which it will have.

Ours does short journeys but I wring it's neck once a week.

Turbos on the M47T2 engine 2.0d (up until 2007) have been known to fail, ours was replaced at 79,000miles.

Lots of reading here

Bingo. Full House. Winner!

If she wants a 1 series get her one. They are a decent enough car and will hold value well so a sensible enough purchase. Don't get her what she wants and in subtle ways you will never hear the end of it.

Thanks for the links, I will take a look now.

Did you have a warranty or did you have to pay for the replacement?

The biggest problem might be finding a blue one, lol!

I bought ours privately.

The bill was paid by the previous owner as it happened to them.

New turbo, glow plugs, strip of the head and some other bits = 3K
