Power Interruption Gti6

Recommended Posts

Para

I have 2002 VTS engine fitted with older type GTI6 loom and unlocked ECU. All seems to be done as described in many topics here, nothing unusal or customised. My project is like a copy of dozen GTI6 projects here.

After the conversion I've done about 5000 miles in the car and it all seems to be working perfect apart for 1 thing. While normal every day driving, car can interrupt... it feels like petrol is not going in and car is about to stop, this is only happening for a second or 2 and then everything is comming back to normal with a kick of power. To speed up the come back of power all I have to do is lift my foot from the acceleration pedal and then press it again. Power off - power back ... !!!!

The weird thing is that when i'm on the track day with the car and I am pressing pedal more often and harder then there is no problems at all. It's only when i'm driving like a pensioner when the probles apears.... Any suggestions guys ? I can bet something like that happen to you already :)

PS: On top of those problems I got another one very recent, I have a problem with starting up the car when warm.. Cold start absolutely no problem, then I'm out for a spin parking the car to top up some petrol and I can't start it. I need to try like 3 or 4 times ....

please help

Does the rev counter drop down to/towards zero when the engine loses power, or does it still read correctly?

It reads correctly but obviously doesn't move up but it's going down slowely like I lift my foot from the pedal.

Hot starting problem - could be the cam position sensor.

I thought about fuel pump too. When you will be changing it, I would like to find out if this is the problem.

All the sensors are new.

I have ordered one, but its going to take till next week to get the new pump. I will try test the pump pressure before the new one arrives.

Should I replace it with standard new one or there is some work involved to suit the conversion ?

I had a similar problem, turned out to be the lambda sensor.

I don't know if it's to early to say this but I think I sort out my power delivery interruption problem. Today I've install new air filter, Pipercross. When I took the old one off I've notice dirt build up around the throttle, all it took is the proper clean and after new filter has been install everything seems to be smooth and no sign of problems anymore. Revs are stable now and after short runs I've done I didn't notice any interruptions. Does this might be the case ? ??

Did you change the pump in the end? Does the clean seem to have sorted it?

I didn't change the pump yet but i will, just need to find the proper one.

Filter change and clean sort out the problem so far, car is running smooth and nice.

I have exactly this problem but it is not the air filter :)

Every day I start the car and drive it about 300m and every day it loses power completely for a couple of seconds as if its an electrical outage.

1) If I take my foot off and put it bacon again the power comes back but it loses it again short time later.

2) If I leave my foot exactly where it is on the throttle, the car hesitates and then suddenly full power comes back in again and off she roars. If I do this, the power is restored for quiet a while.

3) If I have been driving with lots of throttle movement, usually there is no problem with power loss as described. As soon as I have slowed down from 'spirited' driving and hold a stead throttle, the power disappears again, then refer to points 1 and 2 above for further symptoms.

I have tried:

disconnecting the lambda - no difference

New (pattern) TPS : I imagined a slight difference - but problem still essentially the same.

new air flow sensor - still the same

good clean out around the inside of the intake - still the same.

It really seems like TPS as it reacts to throttle position, but I'm reluctant to chuck big money at a pug genuine TPS if it doesn't solve it .. Gaaaaah!!! Driving me nuts :)

You can unplug the TPS completely for testing purposes without issue - if the fault vanishes you know it's something related to the TPS or wiring, whereas if it's still there then you can rule that out.
