I'm convinced that website is far from correct.

As I said earlier, whilst not perfect, it's going to be accurate enough to give a close approximation.

The number of cars taxed will be correct, give or take a handful with renewals/refunds being processed.

The number of cars declared SORN will be roughly correct - there may be a small number that have been scrapped and are still showing as SORN as they weren't correctly disposed of and the SORN hasn't expired yet, but this will be a very small number.

There will be some cars out there that have been off the road for so long that they pre-date the SORN system, but it seems unlikely that this will be more than a couple of hundred or so. A few cars holed up in barns, some competition cars that are never used on the road, and some that have been in pieces in peoples garages for many years.

Cars that are currently registered in the name of traders (ie on the yellow slip) won't show unless they're taxed or there's still an outstanding SORN declaration from the previous owner. Again, I can't see that there's that many cars in this state - again, a couple of hundred tops maybe?

Cars that are incorrectly registered won't show, but for the most part this is an issue with imports, of which there aren't very many - the cancelled Japanese order I believe were registered correctly. Far more of an issue with JDM grey imports, as they're registered as whatever the importer declared them as (my previous Eunos Roadster was simply registered as a "Mazda" with no model!). The only thing that doesn't appear to be listed is some special editions (e.g. 1FM's) which will likely be under the default "205" catagory.

Obviously cars that are still on foreign plates and aren't registered with the DVLA won't show up. I'm not sure whether Northern Ireland cars are or aren't included, given that they're registered with a different arm of the DVLA AFAIK - any ideas? The fact that it mentions "GB" more than "UK" suggests not.

With those exceptions, the figures should be accurate enough - within 10-15% anyway I'd imagine, and should be under - rather than over - stated (ie there's more cars still in existance than the figures suggest).

I still blame the reduction in numbers on track car projects and people breaking easily repairable cars for financial gain. There is nothing wrong with a few being loved as a track car, properly converted but there are so many dreamers out there who are "halfords mechanics" and really havent got a clue. They start with ripping the interior out, then get bored and break the vehicle. Such a shame. I , hand on heart, havent scrapped a GTi for years and never will again.

We have to stop this trend of breaking cars for financial gain too, I know you will never stop it completely but I really think more emphasis should be put on restoration and how rust is NOT the problem people make it out to be.

My original GTi (the Sla) will be comming back to life this year, im determined.

Its only going to get worse! As the number of cars on the road dwindle same as the parts supply, the demand for parts will become higher thus more valuable so more people will break them to make money!

Then again maybe not, just a theory. All theories are opinions
