i am amazed to see that there are so many more sorned than licenced ( if i read that correctly ) but numbers are definitely going down steadily sadly :(

yeah was only saying to a mate the other day, u never see early nova's, astras, xr2's etc anymore, scrappage scheme killed a lot of cars

i agreed the scrappge scheme was a disaster to a lot of classic cars and i understand there are calls for another :angry:

 

way too many unloved cars that with tlc and an enthusiast owner would still be gracing our roads are now gone and i for one dont see the green economics of that over building a new car!

 

yes i understand that modern cars with their strictly controlled emissions and safety features are what the government would rather see on the roads and their sales further driving the economy but us who are fans of older more interesting machines will always be against the scrappage scheme and any forthcoming incarnations that may come.

The government is really only interested in collecting tax on new car sales. If cars are more disposable this is a great money maker.

If they continue scrappage schemes then good old cars will end up owned by enthusiasts only. Its good for us as the value of our vehicles will only go up. Not good if you want parts to be continued to be made or generally like to see classics on the road.

Summary of the last five years for taxed and SORN'd cars

 

2008 Q3 = 7760 total (3987 taxed / 3773 SORN)

2009 Q3 = 7013 total (3345 taxed / 3668 SORN)

2010 Q3 = 6507 total (2930 taxed / 3577 SORN)

2011 Q3 = 6041 total (2389 taxed / 3652 SORN)

2012 Q3 = 5607 total (2136 taxed / 3471 SORN)

 

Obviously there's a few cars out there that aren't properly registered (eg some late GTi's were mistakenly registered as 1FM's) and some that have been laid up since before SORN needed declaring, but those figures should give a pretty reasonable estimate of the numbers out there - should be within 10-15% or so I'd guess anyhow.

the debate on car tax gets me!!The government have made noises about abolishing it which i believe they will but by then the majority of cars will be zero or very low tax rated anyway!!!This will be replaced by toll roads on a huge scale!!I read only yesterday that the government are intending to encourage private companies to build more toll roads to help get the economy going again and im guessing the government will enjoy the huge tax benefits from that,so one tax will be replaced by another,albeit in a rather hidden way!!!

Another stab at the scrappage scheme wouldn't suprise me in the least!!Although we might prefer to drive around in classic/older cars the powers that be want you out of them and buying more modern 'eco friendly' plastic boxes to drive around in!!There would be a lot of popular cars out there that would take the hit if there was another such scheme!!

those stats are pretty health Anthony when you consider as already mentioned the kinds of cars that were around in the 205's heyday-maestro and montego mg turbos,astra mk 1 & 2,fiestas,citroen bx's and visa's!!You almost never see these cars on our roads nowadays!!

I don't see the scrapage scheme as having had that big an effect to be honest. The vast majority of the cars that were traded in were everyday cars from the mid 90s - Escorts, Cavaliers, Astras, Metros, etc. I'm sure a few nice cars did go, but the idea of it decimating the number of classics is incorrect imo.

 

What really made the numbers go down is the same thing as it always has been - time. They're 25 year old cars, and they don't last forever. It's exactly the age when all the preventative maintenance that previous owners never bothered to do builds up and makes maintenance too expensive, so they end up being scrapped or broken.

Of course, what's often interesting is the effect that enthusiasts themselves have - take the example of the modern day BX 16v:

 

Xsara VTS Phase 1 (listed as Xsara 2.0 VTS) is down to just 112 of them left on the road (and 45 SORN)! :o

 

Whilst time has undoubtably impacted them, the sheer numbers that have been broken for parts in the past few years has decimated their numbers - over 75% have been removed from the roads in the last four years, far more than you could put down to natural attrition. By comparison, 205 GTi's have lost "just" 23% of their numbers in the same period.

 

Phase 2 models (listed as Xsara VTS 16v) aren't a whole lot more healthy, with 397 left on the road and 86 SORN

There are ~185,000 Citroen Xsara Picassos remaining in General Blighty and I for one won't rest until they're all turned back into their constituent molecules and made into something useful.... :puke:

It's just dawned on me that I'm still taking 205 ownership and ready available spares for granted. I just thought about 10/20 years time when I'll no longer be able to get hold of something when it breaks. I feel a little anxious now.

H, that can't be correct can it? Surely there are more than 130 CTIs left in the UK?

Between the two of them, that makes nearer 600 in total, which sounds far more realistic.
