1.1 Tu Ma4 -> Ma5 Upgrade, Higher Fifth Wanted

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We've got a 4spd 1.1TU 205 which is getting a whole chunk of use at the moment as our nice sensible motorway cruiser...

The clutch is starting to bite softly, not slipping once engaged yet, but it won't be long. Since I've got to pull the box out for that, I'm thinking I might as well accidentally pick the wrong box up on refitting and throw a five-speed in.

From this listing, I'm starting to surmise that a five-speeder out of a similar-engine TU-powered PSA shoebox is just going to give us a wider choice of ratios in the middle, rather than a cruising gear somewhere south of frenetic.

Does anybody know what the ratios in a 1.4 would typically be like?

Even better, does anybody have a spare MA5 out of a 1.4-or-so kicking about? Collection should be easy enough anywhere around the West Midlands/Welsh Borders/Cotswolds/NW Home Counties.

Thanks a bunch,

Adrian.

If its for motorway way cruising stay away from XS boxes if you happen to stumble across one, 70mph is roughly 4,000rpm. What you really want is the box out of a UK spec Rallye (not as hard to find as you may think as no one wants them) they are stupily long with 70 being more like 3,000rpm if can remember that long ago when I had the TU in the Rallye!

be careful dropping longer ratios on the 1.1, it wont have the guts to pull a longer gear!

They work just fine at a healthy RPM, of course a 5 speed box will help with that if you do motorway work.

Yep, that's certainly a serious risk - let's be honest, there's times that the current 4th's a bit high... But so long as we don't end up with 1-4 higher than the current 1-4, I'll be reasonably happy. Just something that'll bring the revs down a chunk at cruise altitude.

It'd be great if we ended up with 4th somewhere about current 3.5, maybe just under current 4th, and 5th about current 4.5, IYSWIM.

Without grommiting about in the engine bay, does anybody know offhand what box code we're likely to have currently, so I can figure out what I'm looking for?

It's a '90/G 3dr 1.1 Style.

OK, I've found the sticker - and it's all but illegible. It seems to be 2CA3<something>, but the corner's folded over, it's covered in grime, and the print started to come off with the grime when I gave it a spray of brake cleaner. From the link above, that'd put it to 2CA33, 2CA36 or 2CA37 - the ratios are the same, diff is different. 2CA36 has different speedo gearing.
